I am not precisely an atheist; I stand about halfway between atheism and agnosticism. I tend to believe in a higher power...but I don't know what "they" are, I don't care, and I refuse to worship anything under any circumstances. I don't do blind faith, or any other kind of faith for that matter...I've been burned too many times by it in the past.
You want to know specifically why I don't buy the whole "God" spiel? Simple; there are too many wholes in the story for it to be believable. There's a line from a song that sums this up in m opinion: "If you can't do the math, then get out of the equation." Too much of the Christian/Catholic/Protestant belief system doesn't add up...or worse, doesn't hold up under close inspection. I refuse to believe in something that defies logic or that makes no sense...and this falls under both categories. If you examine it closely, you find innumerable contradictions and missing pieces in the puzzle...and no proof of the allegations whatsoever. I also dislike the idea of an absolute truth. Anything that proclaims that their way is "right" is going to earn my enmity. I prefer to think for myself, thanks...I draw my own conclusions. Besides, why would I believe in something that has never helped me out? What little I have in this world, I have more than paid for, usually in blood, sweat, and tears. Where were these "benevolent" beings when I needed help...or when I still do need help? I have lost more than anyone will ever know, and all that time it seemed like any powers in existence were actively working against me...and still are. Why should I spare something a kind thought when they were never there? I am forsaken, and so I will forsake them...if they exist.
As for life without "God"...who can say? Life was **** to begin with...I doubt his prersence or absence has made a difference. Knowing that I have nothing and no one to rely on save my own strength has enabled me to survive...so what if the price was my innocence, my trust in all things? So what if I am pessimistic and cynical? I probably would have been so regardless. Realistically, if I believed in "God", if I thought salvation was more than a myth, an ideal...I would have killed myself long ago.

I don't accept any higher power above me. I basically don't believe because I don't see why I should. I mean, my life has been perfectly okay so far, without a god. I'm the only one to take the important decisions. Plus, I'm free from the guilt a believer usually feels after doing something he wasn't supposed to do. All I am not supposed to do is what laws tell me not to do. I don't have any further laws than those from the state. And I don't have to tell anybody what I did or failed to do. In short, I feel free. Here most people go to church on Sundays. Well, I'm entirely free on Sundays to do whatever I please. And that's a liberty I don't mean to give up, especially to something that is no more than a promise, and more so, if for the sake of that promise I'm supposed to sacrifice parts of my life on earth, which is the only one we're all sure about.

I believe, like some of the others that replied, that there IS a higher power, but that he/she/it doesn't play a role in our lives. That's not particuarly an atheist, but I still feel obligated to answer your question.
I don't believe in god because I dislike the view that one group of people is more correct than any other. Throughout history there have been numerous religions and they believed they were right in their beliefs, i.e. the Egyptians, the Norse, among others. I believe that if you live your life well, you're doing the best you can with what you have. Life is sacred, so live it up.
As for life without god, it's pretty dandy. :)

You need to read "The Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan. He leaves absolutely no doubt about who the winner is in the science vs. religion debate. I was agnostic before I read the book, and atheist as soon as I finished it. He uses an example like this: If you've got an infection you can either pray or take antibiotics. Only one of these options will produce reliable results. Anyway, there is no evidence that any religion is true. There is overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I do admit however that several aspects of religion can be beneficial to believers. There is something to be said about being honest and having good-will toward other human beings.

First of all, the book his followers subscribe to carries a horrible list of atrocities: www.evilbible.com
Thats like asking "How's life without an imaginary friend?"
I enjoy, respect, protect and appreciate nature, I claim responsibility for my failures and accomplishments. I enjoy the support and supporting my friends and family (I refer to them as my pack).
I enjoy learning and am fascinated by science and nature. If bad things happen, we all deal with them in different ways.
Death isn't an issue: If death is, I am not, if I am, death is not.
Higher power:
I believe in a "soul" part: The part that knows when the brain isn't working right. I think our superconscious(us) is able to manifest anything we want in life: even problems. I think we bring everything thats in our life there.
There are things I have seen, been part of, or witnessed that have not been explained by science, and that is OK! What is life without great mysteries!
I wouldn't blame them on some invisible higher power, either.
My sundays are freed up for more kayaking.
I love nature, I love to travel, I love to see new things. My health is good, and I enjoy whitewater kayaking and nights of gratuitus sex with my partner(who's sterile -yay! We don't want kids). I'm finally making great money after two very tough years of getting this business off the ground.
Life is excellent, but I've been pretty lucky.
I do resent a lot of what Christianity has been up to, and will avoid supporting christian businesses who interfere with Women's rights. I've had friends who were Atheist or pagan that were helping out down in NOLA after Katrina and they didn't DARE tell the locals their view on things.
I've got Christian friends, and my dad is an episcopal deacon, but we keep religious conversation to good-natured ribbing.

I only feel O.K. about fielding this because I am considered an Atheist. I don't consider myself an atheist though... I don't disbelieve in the possibility of God, I do not however accept God as a given fact. I have read on many faiths (sent to do so by my Grandfather, a minister) but any that state implicitly that their way is the one and only way, I generally view as being evil. I tend to look for proof in all aspects of things, especially spiritual. Do I believe in God, No, not until someone brings me his picture. Do I accept that it is possible that there is a God. Yes. Label away :)

It is of no concern to me.
I do not think of God or an afterlife other than when I am amusing myself on the Internet. Playing with my friends or enemies in cyberspace is the only time the subject occupies my thoughts.
I have studied religion and history and find no reason to believe "God(s)" exist other than in a person's own mind.

belief in god is susspended by different reason by atheists for many different reasons, me (when atheist) i wondered why god would make a planet with death, and what not, sin and all, it is said that god knows everything u do before you do it, well that means that he had pretty much planned your life, then why does he plan the lives of his childeren to murder, steal and break other commandments, and of all the room in the universe, how can we be the only thing that god can come up with, we suck, we kill earth, we kill and rape people and we are the best thing that god can come up with, some god! and where does this whole bigger plan thing come into hand?
