1 Get up & sit somewhere else

2 Sit & do nothing...suffer through it

This is a true scenario by the way...and I don't know what's the correct way to handle it.

don't play their game. make your own rules!
first, stick it out.
second, stick it to 'em.
third, stick your finger down your throat.
finally, puke on 'em.... they'll move. trust me.

Of course, your question is a true scenario. It's happened to me many times. Sitting next to a very smelly person makes me feel sick. I always leave even if there is no place to sit. I don't think I have to sit there and suffer. The very smelly person should know better and should take care of himself properly (good hygiene). Actually the very smelly person is the rude person and when you move away, you are only acting in self defense.

I though one of your choices was going to be "Tell them to get a shower" or something like that. That one I would not have chosen. Now, of the other two, I'll definitely go with 1. You're not insulting this person by just moving. There are a million other reasons why you'd want to change seats.

I suppose it depends on the scenario. Is the bus full, or have they just OPTED to sit next to you? If they're sitting weirdly close, I'd move. Plus, are they stinky because they don't seem to take care of themselves, or because it's blisteringly hot and B.O. is sometimes unavoidable? Use your best judgement on the situation; it may be offensive to move, but I'd be asking if the possible offense is appropriate within the situation.

That's a very good question. I had the same problem on the train yesterday. It was so bad that my lungs were hurting. I was trying to take short breathes. I just leaned further away from him and just suffered through it. Today the same man got on the train and someone took the seat by me before him, so he sat behind me. I could still smell him. That is terrible. Can't people smell themselves if it's that bad?

Well it really depends. On how bad the person smells.
I work with an extremely bad smelling co-workers and when there is not enough seats in the office you have to sit through his smell. I would definetly move if I could though.

I would do number 1 because y cause yourself to sit there and maybe get an upset stomach and ruin your day while they continue to go on being happy and smelly for the rest of theirs

If it's truly offensive, get up and find a new place to sit. It doesn't have to be known it has something to do with the person. Don't make a big deal of it though.

A lady always keeps a handkerchief in her bag...sometimes with a drop of perfume on it. To spare the feelings of the poor unfortunate next to you, press your hankie to your nose, muttering about the horrible "allergies" that plague you.

I small inconvenience for you is a small price to pay to soothe the soul of someone less fortunate than yourself.
