Well, i'm just curious about the walking and playing outdoor with my pomeranian, Honeycomb. She's 4 months old now and first took her outside when she was about 3 and a half months old, she seem pretty fine (with collar and leash on her neck, otherwise she'll b running around like a mad crazy little dog! seriously! she was sooo crazy!). I took her out 3 times a week..and walk and run with her for about 20 mins. The 3rd day that she went out we pause at the grocery store, came out and found out that she'd vomitted. Well, the Vet said it was because she's still a puppy and i should give her more time..so put a pause on the outdoor session. I'm curious..when is the right time and right age for my pomeranian to go walking with me. I dont want her to panic when she sees load of cars driving and barking madly at the passerby. U kno what i mean? and this is sooo naive of me but what should i bring when i about to walk my Pomeranian? Thanks in advance. muah xXx

Dogs should not be outside in areas where other dogs may have relieved themselves until approximately 2 weeks after their last Parvo shot, which would be approximately 4 1/2 months old. You can start training them to walk on a leash as early as 8 weeks, but don't expect too much until they are about 16 weeks. Make sure that the area is safe and that there isn't much traffic. Dogs should not be exposed to heavy traffic areas until they are confident walking on a leash.

You also want to be careful running your dog. She's still growing and you don't want to do ddamage to her joints, so take it easy. A slow jog for a short time period is good.

By your description, it sounds like she may have vomited because she had gotten over excited. My lab has done this before. Work with her and give her time to adjust to new environments. It sounds as though you may have left her outside alone while running into the store & if so, someone may have fed her something, or she may have picked up something off the ground near where you tied her up which caused her to vomit.

I'd recommend a good obedience program so that you can get some assistance with socialization. Check them out and do some research on their training method before making a decision. I would not recommend programs that use a choke collar. There are good programs that use clicker training. Some programs use food as a reward while others rely on praise. If you have a Petsmart in your area, they usually have good trainers that you may wish to talk to.

Good luck!

A four month old Samoyed weight what, 20-25 pounds and growing fast? The Pomeranian weighs about what, 7 pounds? How long to you think it will be before the puppy seriously hurts the Pomeranian?

As for the vomiting, did you feed her or give her water to drink before you took her on the walk? If so, then don't for sure feed her and if she must have water before she goes, give it to her and then wait about 20 mins or so before you go on a walk. Your Pom is not too young to go on a walk, in fact, this is a good time for the both of you to bond, and for you to socialize her and begin to have her walk by your side, and eventually sit by your left side when you stop. This will all happen in time. Take it slow, she's learning. When you are walking your dog, start off slow maybe just that 20 mins or a little less. Take her in areas where it's a little quieter, (no trucks or cars or very little of them). If this is not possible, then start off slow down your street, when cars/trucks begin to pass by, have your dog stand by your left side; if she reacts to the passing traffic by jumping/barking/shying away etc, bring her to your side and say something like Shhhh. Stand up straight when you are with her like this and let her know you are the boss, the "pack leader". Repeat this a few times, if it is not working, then when you can catch her on a good note (good behavior), move on, and head back to the house. Do little lessons at a time. However, one thing you must do and remember is, get her out there to socialize her, and walk her at least 30 mins a day, especially when she's going on about 6 months or so. Walking her will not only calm her down, but give her a sence of she's done a job/some work. This will fulfill her walking instinct that is a part of her being an animal/dog. Actually, this goes for all dogs/all breeds. Get your dog out there for a 30 minute walk, everyone, and you will see a wonderful difference. No, letting them out in the back yard to play fetch with a ball, or to just run around is not good enough. You have got to get them out there walking. If this is not possible, then see if you can get someone else to do it, your dog will love you for getting him out there.
Also, get your pup enrolled in a puppy training class, again this is good socialization, and a good time for you both to be bonding and learning.

You're vet is the one who said, no, so ask him when it is the right time. We take our Pom to the park and let him chase the ball and play. We got him when he was 5 months old and he's been active ever since--minus about a month long stent of being sick, having surgery, almost dying, and recouperation time. (hint for all dog lovers... potpouri BAD BAD BAD for dogs. Throw it out now.) You may want to go out with him early in the am, or later in the evening... wait for the coolest part of the day, because remember, he has that thick coat of hair. You don't want him to overheat... Is it possible that he could have overheated that time? Whatever you decided enjoy him, treat him right, and he'll be you're faithful friend for life...

I would suggest training the dog so that she doesn't wear herself out. Bring her outside for walks, and keep her on the leash, but don't let her go running and roaming free. Eventually she'll get used to the outdoors. She's probably just super excited because it's a new environment.
