I only have enough money saved up to buy plane tickets, but not enough to live off of for a year. I would love it if I could find some work abroad program that would let you visit a few different countries and would be affordable.

In Australia and New Zealand they have a scheme called "WWOOFing" which stands for Willing Workers On Organic Farms. In return for doing light work around the farm, you get fed and given a bed. Check out the NZ website below.

Other countries may also have similar schemes.

You can attent college and take a semester in Greece or Italy or other such country that the university may have an relationship with. At the end of the semester, for example, my niece traveled 4 weeks with a backpack and via train- great experience for her. It is helpful if you know another language- Spanish, Italian, German, French (but if you go to France go to the small French cities, "Paris-ites" will tend to be rude).

There are lots of educational programs to do that... Especially through collegiate study abroad programs. Also, there is semester at sea and some youth tours, but those only go to a few places... your best bet is:

1. get a bunch of frommers guides
2. map out a few key places you want to go
3. find a friend to join you
and finally:
4. go on the net and find YOUTH HOSTELS - that's your lowest cost housing and once you go to those, they have TONS of resources to help you find cheap places to eat, stay and shop...

Have fun!

not very likely, unless you do as Ricky Williams did, and leave the NFL to go live in a hut for a year so he could smoke dope, and not worry about drug tests
