So agnostics and atheists are allowed to come on here and say whatever they like to Christians. they call us names, from "brainwashed" to "stupid" to "dangerous." they curse and use swear words toward us. then, they post perverted questions designed to make us mad. but all of this is good for us, they're doing it to "challenge us" and "open our minds."
but the second a Christian quotes a Bible verse, they're stomped into silence because they're not allowed to "shove their religion down your throat."
I mean what gives. are we playing by the same rules, or not?

Cirque,
I know, isn't it funny how ignorant people only prove their lack of intelligence. Don't allow them to make you angry, or allow them entree' into your heart. We all know who wins in the end and personally, I believe Christ will allow us to be there at the Judgment seat when he casts them all into the pits of hell. The answer to your question is no, we aren't really all playing by the same rules. Some make theirs up as they go along (them) and ours have been written down for the last, ooh, 2000 years or so. Be strong.

Ive seen Christians be mean also, but very few cussing while quoting the Bible. It does seem to me that though both sides can be nasty that the non christians are indeed nastiest. Sometimes Christians answer a non believers question with something implying they're going to Hell, which isnt cool BUT I think if we count up which side says nasty things more, non christians win by a landslide.

This section is FOR religion and spirituality, it isnt like we're all on a gaming site or something and just preaching. I dont see what interest a non believer has in this stuff if they indeed do not believe it themselves. If they think maybe they can change someones mind, it wont ever be done cussing them or making sexual remarks against Jesus.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Not all agnostics or atheists post hateful things on here, and I've seen Christians post hateful things using swear words towards atheists and agnostics.

Trust me, opinions like yours are posted all the time, you just must not be on here at the right time to see them. And Christians get away with quoting the bible, a lot.

As someone who has no choice but to believe in god but isn't quite sure about jesus, I believe I have something of an answer. The problem is that there is a vocal minority of both christians and atheists. Unfortunately, A great many people who call themselves christian don't truly follow the path of christ, instead using passages of (usually) the old testament to condemn all who don't live in their own twisted (and definitely not christian) world. Many people become atheists because they are exposed to such people at an early age and develop a bitterness. I have never had a problem with true christians. But will I pick a fight with a false one? Heck yes.

Technically, agnosticism and atheism aren't religions, but by the way they vehemently defend both as the only ways to live a healthy and productive life, you'd think they'd get the picture.

What needs to happen is this: Stupidly vocal Christians who don't know what they're talking about and equally idiotic and loud atheists/agnostics all need to just shuuut uppp. They're ruining this for everyone, and making the other members of their religions/not-religions look like the dolts they themselves are.

I reject your premise. You have obviously not been stomped into silence. If you had, I wouldn't be responding to you now.

And yes -- agnostics and atheists ARE allowed to come on here and say (nearly) anything they want. That is how the Internet works. If you want to go some place where everyone thinks just like you -- go to church. Don't come nito an open forum and tell people they have no right to be there.

I will answer for myself, only. I am an ignosticist, (not an agnosticist) but let's simplify it into a non-believer, okay?

So, I think (which is not just "I say, for the sake of it": I really and honestly think, from the bottom of my heart, and from my experience with believers) that most religious people have been brainwashed. That, of course, is not your fault. You're not the ones to blame. You're victims of a very clever and long established operation. And that is MY opinion. Not THE truth.

I have also said that religions are dangerous (not that believers are). Andalso this comes from my experience. Religions have been the basis for wars, as well as the most diverse methods of torture of the people who are or think differently (the Inquisition, the Crusades, etc.) And if you come closer in time, the Catholic Church has supported each and every dictatorship in Latin America. So, religions are dangerous. That's very different from saying that individual believers are dangerous.

And I have never called you stupid. I may have called an argument a believer put forth stupid. But that's again different. I don't discuss people. I discuss ideas. I don't make this personal, because that would imply that I claim that you don't have the right to believe in god. And I do think you have that right. Not all ideas are respectable (think of Nazism, to exaggerate). But all people are, no matter what they think.

As for perverted or insulting questions, I have never posted one, and I often answer to those others put, by saying that I as a non-believer don't agree with the question. But then again, you must understand that whatever is sacred for you, we have the perfect right NOT to consider as sacred. So, we have the right not to show the reverence you show to those things. I mean, we are entitled to discuss the virginity of Jesus, or the sanctity of Mary, for example. We can do that, as long as we are respectful. So, "I" think anything can be discussed with respect. Some believers seem to feel that some things can't be discussed, not even with respect. That's where our freedom of speech comes up, and you have to accept that, and at any rate, ignore us. Or you are welcome to say what you think about our discussions.

And as for quotes from the Bible, you're of course entitled to use them. But you have to bear in mind that we don't take the bible as a sacred and necessarily truthworthy source. So whatever comes from the bible may or may not be true for us. So it doesn't mean anything to us. I have occassionally asked in a question for answerers not to quote from the bible. But that was because those answers were no use for me. You'd be wasting your time if you did. I didn't mean to censor you. I meant to save your time.

And finally, I don't want anybody to have to shut up. Say what you please. It's actually usually other Christians who are continually hinting that we should not hang around here, that this section belongs to them or that you have to know about religion if you want to talk about it. If any non-believer has ever asked you to "shove your religion down your throat" then it's this jerk you have to discuss this with. I will always stand by you, when it comes to your right to say what you want. Even if I though the very exact opposite of whatever you want to say.

It's quite possible that a lot of the atheists and agnostics that you experienced were first put down or rejected for their beliefs. And it may also be that the ones who had challenged you to open your mind are not the same ones who had resorted to name calling.
It's better not to generalize. I think if you really dug deep enough you'd find people who you thought were good Christians, people you thought were bad Christians, people you thought were good atheists and people who you thought were bad atheists. I don't think the ratios of good to bad would even change that much.
I personally find that the biggest determining factor in how people react to me is how I first react to them. Even if you don't think that you are reacting to them negatively but you still have a negative bias in your mind of some sort it will still surface and make itself known. And the person that you are interacting with is likely not to even be consciously aware of it.

Why does everyone make such a big deal of this??? People, in general, are stupid, and therefore ask stupid questions and make stupid questions. I don't believe there is a God. You do. If you don't like what people are saying, don't read it. This entire site is a little electronic world. It's all just word, and they can't hurt you unless you let them. Find something more positive to focus on, your God perhaps, and quit crying about what a bunch of morons think someone wants to hear.

It's about more than a few bible verses, and I think you know that. Sorry, but I'm not going to play the "poor, persecuted Christian" game tonight. It goes both ways. You know good and well that there are jerk Christians on this site, don't you?

I've not noticed any difference in the obnoxiosness (and is that a word?) of the atheist/agnostic posts and the Christian posts. Please all of you get a life, and realize that not everyone has the same spiritual path (if any). Leave everyone in peace to worship, or not, in the ways they see most fit.
