I think they should learn English AND EARN their citizenship. My Mother in Law is an immigrant, and she WORKED to become an American Citizen. It's a slap to her and others who have worked hard to become citizens.

I'm Canadian, but I think that immigrants to Canada, like immigrants to the US should at least be able to speak some English, or French in the case of Canada, before they are given citizenship. Of course, their English skills will show a marked improvement once they have been in the US for a little while. So they should not be expected to be perfectly fluent upon arrival, but it is not unfair to require them to have a basic knowledge of English.

YES -- we forget that the US does not have an official language, just a common one, which was actually on the verge of being german. Besides, most immigrants come to this country expecting and/or hoping to learn english, but Americans don't make it easier for them when we give them a puzzled look and an attitude instead of helping them understand and attempting to understand them. I have seen many beautiful relationships fourish between people who do not speak a common language. It is possible. All that is necessary is acceptance.

citizenship to America is a matter of money..don't let anyone tell you different..200 yrs ago when people migrated her from russia, italy, germany etc..not all of them spoke English...go to little tokyo in every large city..the signs are not in English...but you knew that before going...so..deal with it..

if someone pays for the legal immigration and is able to sing the national anthem and they are willing to say the pledge of allegiance and can speak even a little bit of English..that is a start..it would be NICE..but..English is not as easy to learn as Spanish or other latin languages ..remember..Americans still get C's in English in HIGH SCHOOL...SO IT CAN'T BE ALL THAT EASY...we may be able to talk on the street..but there are many people outside of the US that speak it better than some Americans...

I think that for an immigrant to get US citizenship they have to know more about the country than most born citizens do. What does it matter if they speak English they can learn. I dont think that it should be a requirement. I think everyone should be welcome!!

Define "good English". My ex-boyfriend thinks his English isn't very good but I think it's clear and understandable enough. I usually can understand what he says. His spelling needs serious help though, but I don't know how good that has to be to become a citizen. He has an English teacher, so at least he's trying.
I personally can't stand those who don't bother even trying to learn English.

If they want to live here let them have citizenship without English if they have a job and are paying taxes to the system.
