If they tell the truth, it will be because of their own personal value system. People who ARE Christians have sworn on the bible and then never upheld their oath. Bush is a prime example.
The oath to be taken by the president on first entering office is specified in Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.
He has violated, eviscerated and stepped all over the Constitution....so he lied. And he's a Christian!!!!!!

No kidding. It's a shock the ACLU hasn't intervened yet.
Believing in God doesn't matter. The act of swearing is symbolic, but you are saying out loud that you understand you're supposed to be truthful. That way if it is found that you have lied, you can be held accountable.

In some jurisdictions, one has the choice to swear either on the Bible or to make a solemn affirmation. No matter which the person chooses, he or she is guilty of perjury is he or she lies.

It doesn't matter what you put your hand on. It is the promise to tell the truth itself which is enough. And after making that promise, not telling the truth can get you in some real trouble.

There is no more swearing on the Bible in court anymore...it's just a raise your right hand, etc.

Yep, it's called Perjury if you don't... which is odd because the courts consitently limit the Bible... hmm wonder when the ACLU is going to hit that one.

If someone does not believe in the oath he/she is taking, there is certainly no compelling reason to tell the truth.

Nobody HAS to tell the truth, regardless. The only person who will know if you are lying, is YOU.
