$1000 will get a base model hdtv set. If possible, get a DLP set. They are lighter and much less susceptible to image burn than regular hd sets.

Circuit City actually has a lot of choices. They can help you find the best one also. Also your cable company for your area has and hdtv deal. The only problem with hdtv is that it only gives hdtv to the lower channels or the news channels. But if you really want the best hdtv, it's Tivo. The picture is really clear and every channel is in hdtv.!!!!! You can also try it at Circuit City and see if you really like it.

There are many factors you haven't mentioned like what size you are looking for, whether you have satellite, cable or over the air reception. Your probably not going to find any large HDTV's of decent quality in that price range, but you can get some very nice tube TV's in the 32"-36" range. (Sony, Panosonic, Toshiba, Samsung to name a few. Check out the March '06 Consumer Reports for some valuable info on how to choose the right TV for you and what you should expect to pay. Watch for sales.

For $1,000 the you are probably limited to one of the few CRT sets still made. They have good pictures, but nothing compared to the better LCD, plasma, DLP or other "fixed pixel" technologies. At that price you will also be limited to a small screen (27" or less), which really defeats the purpose of HDTV. Howver, if you are willing to wait, I bet that eventually there will be 32" sets available in that price range.
