Go for semi-informal. Have a potluck or a BBQ. If you know someone with a karaoke system, go for it! You can make your own decorations, centerpieces, the wedding flowers for everyone, etc.

Congrats and good luck!

Well How big is the area. Allowing people to move freely around the place, people to enter and go out, and then chairs to be put and a raised platform if you want check how many can be accommodated comfortably. Hope the couple go to Church for solemnisation and only the pre & post marriage lunch/dinner/drink party is being contemplated at backyard. The food etc is ordered from outside. There is enough car parking in front. Your neighbours are cooperative. You have good arrangements for continuous water and electricity and rest room arrangement.
You need rooms for the guests to leave their hats and coats and then arrangements for the plates cups saucers to be washed and cleaned. Lot of human volunteer force is needed.
You have to plan for everything right from city municipal police clearance , then about guests stay , arrival, departure, things needed, security, safety etc etc.
Prepare checklist and review constantly Lot of drawing board work is needed.

If the weather is going to be warm...summertime, this is what I'm doing so you can do the same.

I'm ordering different flavors of dippin dots ice cream, it's uber cold, colder than normal ice cream and it's in frozen little spheres so no mess. It's yummy and not well publicized so people would really get a kick out of it, go to their site at dippindots.com for ordering. I'm also renting a shaved ice cart so everyone can stay cool during and after the ceremony. I requested that everyone dress for the weather...so shorts and tanks are fine with us.

Stay away from hot foods unless you BBQ and finger foods and lots of ice should be on hand! I hope your day is wonderful!

Have a back up plan, such as clearing out a room of the house of furniture in case of bad weather. I'm not talking just rain, cause strong wind can be worse. Some sort of fountain would be pretty. Casual if it's a home wedding.

My second wedding was in our yard. It was beautiful. We were lucky it didn't rain, but we did set up a little gazebo thing for the cake in case something happened. Ours was rather casual, but we and our attendants dressed up really nice. I did tell everyone that they could change into more comfortable clothes once the wedding part was over and the reception began. They did and I'm sure they appreciated it. Also we bought a metal arch off E-bay and my sister decorated it with bells and streamers, and afterwards we put it in a different part of the yard and had our tea roses climb up it. If your party goes into the night, you could string up some white lights. They have those on E-bay too.

look on ebay for great decorations - use natural place settings like flowers for centerpieces - and be creative with candles

get short candles in tall glasses - because of the wind this stops them from blowing out - my cousin bought cheap boxxes of candles - 6 votives for $2 & 12 tealights for $2 then went to walmart and bought a couple sets of cheap glasses (like dinner table regular drinking glasses - they were 8 big and 8 juice glasses for about $15 she put the tealights into the juice glasses and the votives into the tall glasses - she tied little ribbons around the glass near the top and used a dot of glue to hold it in place - make sure you buy onna those special lighters that bends or has a long handle like for a BBQ grill so you can light them!!!

make sure you purchase something to combat the bugs - other then sprays which can get in the foods - citronella candles - the nes off thing works well - as do some incense!!!

My wedding is a backyard wedding. We are doing it late in the evening, using white christmas lights, fern and roses and other types of small flowers. NOT ANYTHING FORMAL, My bridesmaids and groomsmen are all wearing black jeans and white shirts, color isn't a bad idea either, all of my colors are pastles that look wonderful, out door wedding are so simple and lots of fun.

A tent, make in fun and informal, work on your gardens before it arrives and if you don't have them, look into getting those solar powered lights for the garden. When the sun sets, it makes for a great atmosphere. Maybe do a bbq instead of a plated dinner as well.
