My grad school requires that I have Pro but I have Home. Does anybody know if this upgrade is possible and if so, how much does it cost?

I have not tested this exact upgrade, however in most cases if you insert a CD in a Windows machine that has a newer / higher version of the OS you are usually prompted if you want to upgrade. My guess is you can.

There is not a lot of difference between Windows XP Home and Pro, although (obviously) there are some. I would recommend that you ask the school specifically why they need Pro and what exact functionality is required that Home Ed. does not provide. What you might hear is "oh, no difference, it's just our standard".

If that is the case you should tell THEM to pay for it. (OK, we know that's not going to happen.) So, ask if they have any kind of discount or deal on WinXP Pro, educational institutions usually have a discount. Or if you go to purchase it you may be able to get a discounted price as a student.

Good luck.

It cost whatever Pro costs. There's no discount because you had Home first. You install just like anything else. Only make sure you back up all your docs and what ever. When you install a new system over the old one some things like a copied receipt could be erased. Just do a back up on D. It should have a wizard to instruct you. Then install. The Pro program will copy over what it uses and replace what is upgraded. Call Microsoft Help desk if you need to.
