Bull Terriers are NOT pit bulls. Very loyal protective family dog. Good with kids. Love to play. Very powerful, can easily take you dirt surfing. They were originally bred to be fighting dogs but over the tears, they have become outstanding family pets. They have a high tolerance to pain, can be stubborn, and heaven help another dog that snaps at one. Great dogs, but can be very expensive to purchase, Oh well , who ever said love was cheap?

Some of the larger terriers were originally bred to fight each other for "blood sports" - including the many different types of bull terriers.

These dogs are usually great with people and can all make terrific family pets, but you have to bear in mind that you may lose a cat or your kid's hamster in the process. These instincts are hard-wired and can be very strong. Proper training and socialization with children and strangers at an early age is essential. They are very stubborn, can ignore incredible pain and are very powerful - many can drag a full-grown man down the street if they want to attack another dog.

My neighbor has one...lovely.... : (

Generally the dog is *ok*, in the long run a dog from a good environment that is socialized right may be *mostly* ok. But pitt bulls just have some ways that you can't get out of them and shouldn't be trusted totally. The one next door, despite the fact that he isn't as bad as some others, he still has to be kept on a rope when outside now because he may try to go over the fence to fight with our dog or the one on the other side. And years ago he DID go over the other fence and mauled an old woman. Her health really went down hill from there until she died. Why they weren't forced to give it up after she had to get all those stitches I have no idea.

If you get one, just be careful, there are traits in some breeds you can't get out, no matter how the dog is raised. Some of those dogs that are always perfectly good have turned on children and others out of the blue for reasons no one really knows.
