She jumps on people and knocked my friend over one time. Does anyone know how to keep her from jumping on people?

Grab paws...and give them a squeeze (don't make it too painful) but it will get their attention. Also putting your knee in their chest as they are coming up. (No kicking or stepping on their toes).

Also, a great training book "How To Be Your Dogs Best Friend" by The Monks of New Skeet (Up-state New York) ****Awesome book!***

Labs are hyper & they do tend to jump on people if left untrained. I've trained two labs and both learned not to jump. Consistency in training is key. Labs are smart & they learn by repetition. They are retrievers by nature, which means that they do repetitive behaviors by nature.

Make sure that when you give a command, you follow through with it. Only give the command once & then help your dog to obey. For example, if you tell your dog to sit & she doesn't, help her into the sitting position by gently pushing down on her rear end. She'll get it. The "down" command works the same way, but you would start in a sit position until they can go straight down from a standing position. Work on one command at a time until they get it right. Set the dog up for success & give lots of praise when they are successful. Labs want to please you & praise will reinforce positive behaviors. Just be sure to know the level of praise that works for your dog. Really hyper labs sometimes get overly excited if you use a higher pitch & baby tal-type voice.

After your dog has mastered sit, down & stay commands, try the following: When people come to the door, before answering, put your dog in a sit or down position & tell them to stay. You may want to have them on a leash so that you can hold on to them & keep them from reaching your guest. It will take some time before they obey the stay command regularly. When they do not, tell them no & put them back in a sit or down position. Give praise for following those commands & then try stay again. Keep working at it & be consistent. It will work.

I'd also recommend formal training classes, but research them well & don't use take one that uses choke collars or shock collars. These instill obedience by fear (and are considered inhumane by many), & that is not what you want. You want your dog to work to please you not to be fearful of you.

Good luck!

Every time she gets ready to jump on you, knee her in the chest. Start out gentle and work up as needed. Also check out a show on The National Geographic called The Dog Whisperer, Cease Milan. He is sooooooooooo great when it comes to dog problems. He is so worth watching.

I once had a dog like that and my dog trainer told me it could be handled in one of two ways. One is to put a knee up when she jumps on you. The other was to completely ignore the dog until they sit. The dog is only doing it for attention so if you don't give him any he will stop.

training. she is at a good age for training. My friend had a black lab also that did the exact same thing. She had to lock him in the bedroom if anyone was over. Be firm with the dog and tell her NO when she does something like that that shes not supposed to. And reward her when she behaves well, they will teach you everything in training courses.

How often do you take her for a walk? And how long does she walk?Even if she's in the backyard she's still in an enclosed area.
Inside the house is worse. She has all that excess energy and no way to burn it off.Take her for a walk 30 min-1 hr a day, inside or on a treadmill, and you should see some improvement.

She is hyper because she is a lab and still a pup. I hate saying this, but to prevent her from jumping, you have to lift your leg as if you're ready to knee her. But you don't, you just lift your leg like that and say "NO! " or "DOWN!", there's also the stepping on the toes but i'm not sure if that works. don't mean to sound crude.

This is very common.I have a lab a year old to.The best thing to do is to buy a shock collar.I purchased one for $55 and it was the best investment ever for her.You will see a huge overall differnce in her behavior.

when she goes out to meet people put her on a leash and when she's about jump on someone, gently step on the leash. U could also teach her down by gently pushing her down and saying the word until she learns it.
