Don't bring potato, egg, or any like salad unless you have a way to keep them cool. These types of salads breed bacteria very easily when left out too long (2 hours, tops).
Bring finger foods like little sandwiches or you can bake something yummy. You don't even have to make it from scratch. Just buy one of those Betty Crocker boxes and follow the directions. Spruce it up with some icing or sprinkles.
Chicken wings are always a favorite of course. Or fruit (make sure it's cold) can be refreshing on a hot summer day. Put watermelon in the freezer for a little, just long enough to get some ice crystals.
Lemonade is always in fashion, especially if it's made with real lemons.

Normal picnic fare: Potato or macaroni salad. Burgers, hot dogs, condiments, buns. Beverages, cups, plastic utensils. Desserts galore. Something with a flag in it. Try something non-traditional. I usually take a salad of sliced roma tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, thin sliced red onions with a simple dressing of 1/2 cup white vinegar, 1/3 cup olive oil, plus salt pepper and a generous amount of basil. Never have leftovers. Don't have to worry about refrigeration.

You should take the following:
Forty box of Twinkies
Thirty three bottles of wine
Sixteen large bags of chips
One dozen whole chicken fryer
Two hundred medium pizzas
Four hundred gallons of ice cream
Two thousand boxes macaroni and cheese
One hundred pounds of cup cakes
Fifty cases of beer
Fifty pounds of bologney
Thirty pounds of cheese
*One small rabbit*
Mix all ingredients in a clean cement truck. The *rabbit is optional because most people don't like to find a "hare" in their food.

Paper goods( napkins, plates, cups, utensils). A bag to put your trash in at end of picnic. A first aid kit. Insect repellent. A blanket.
Small just means less of everything, but you still need it all.
