Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus. There are prescriptions that limit it's duration. Stress tends to bring about outbreaks. Some people use Carmex for comfort because the prescription medications are expensive. You can try other the counter Abreva. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon,

Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus, the same unpleasant culprit which causes herpes in the genital area. Unfortunately there is no effective home remedy for fever blisters. There is, however, a very effective remedy called acyclovir, which is available as an ointment by prescription from a medical doctor.

You will find that the acyclovir ointment is extremely effective in supressing the painful itch quickly, and helping to ensure that the sore heals within a few days. This is in contrast to using non-prescription rememdies such as "Blistex" or Camphophenique, which only help a little with the pain, and do not speed the healing process.

Good luck with the fever blisters!

The best thing for it is a prescription drug Zovirax (acyclovir) - I'm not sure of the spelling.

The second best is the Abreva over the counter remedy. Shortens the duration.

I agree with the post that says if you first feel the itchy, tingly feeling and get an ice cube on it, you MAY arrest it.

It's true that stress helps bring them on. Also running yourself down. I've found that vitamins every day, along with getting enough rest, can reduce the number of outbreaks.

I've had them since I was a little girl (50 now). I get on average one outbreak a year now, so taking better care of myself has helped a lot. When I was in high school and not eating right or getting enough rest, I got them all the time, until I started taking high potency vitamins. What a difference.

I've tried the L-lysine and haven't found it to help by itself.

Good luck - hope it helps
