To ask someone how much salary they make? How much their home is worth?
Generally it is not polite here in the US to even ask your family members these questions, but it is OK in Russia. I am just asking about cultural differences, and I don't want to insult anyone. Please tell me the answers and what country you are from. Thank you.

I don't think the price of a gift is ever appropriate to ask. However, in China, for example, it is considered quite appropriate to ask people how much they make, how much their car cost, how much their house (apartment) cost, and so on, so it may be OK to ask the price of a gift. Chinese ask each other these questions, but they know that it is not appropriate to ask foreigners the same questions. These are cultural differences.

Here in the UK it isn't polite to ask as it implies that you don't like the gift and you are thinking of returning it for one thing - or of selling it on for another. Or just trying to catch someone out as a possible 'cheap skate'

Absolutely, categorically not! In England you would NEVER ask the price of a gift or how much someone earns (other than your Partner). It would be considered appallingly rude.

In Canada none of those questions are considered polite (and if there's one thing Canadians know, it's how to be polite).
