What is the essence of life? Mammals, DNA and Sacred Balderdash . . . .
Organically, DNA.
Philosophically, you probably mean to delineate the "essence of human life?"
The essence of animal life is struggle. Struggle comes as the organism, however complicated or simple finds it has needs. Action taken to respond to these needs is the essence of animal life. The animal's biochemistry is askew, a signal is sent to a nerve center that then signals 'action' as the animal seeks water, or food or a certain vital missing nutrient. Higher level animals are also able to feel higher feelings such as affection and to notice when affection is missing.
For human beings, then, what is the essence of life? I think that struggle is inherent in our DNA and still plays a huge part. However, our ability to reason, to know and understand about our own death and our mammalian nature . . . all these factors play a big part in what it is that makes us human.
As mammals we must face this truth: at the very minimum someone had to sacrifice their own time and effort and perhaps love to ensure that we survived to an age of viability where we had the minimum ability and resources to fend for ourselves. If we, as mammals, thrived than we received a lot of love and a lot of great 'training' and we owe something to this inheritance . . . our legacy is to leave the world a better place than we found it . . . for that is the nature of the treatment we received.
As sentient (thinking and reasoning) beings our inheritance is this marvelous computer inside our skulls and we need to make our legacy one of reason and striving to further understand the universe and our fellow man.
As beings aware of our own deaths, we need to come to grips not, for heaven's sake with religion because all religions are based in large part on sacred balderdash, but on our own SPIRITUALITY and our own spiritual nature. We need to accept our tie to the universal and our need to pass on the spiritual products of our own success and happiness to others and make their own paths easier.
One question may arise: Is there a God? Call it God or call it the universe . . . there is definitely a power greater than us in the world we live in and it seems to provide us unseen power at various times in our lives. Some folks like Mohandas K. Gandhi, seem able to tap into that power at will and suggest that all of us can learn to do the same . . . it seems reasonable.

Essence = basic quality. SO the basic quality of life is to understand and become in harmony with the creator of life which is Jesus Christ. Once this is done a clear path and definition of life becomes evident. You may then and only then fulfill your divine destiny in him.

This life is a probationary state for us to prepare to meet God. We need to live a life that reflects our conviction and devotion to Christ and that we desire to live with Him again.
