It was once said that was a rule to follow, but since then they have withdrawn that. It probably is a wise thing to allow your body to digest your food, and then comes the cramp situation with eating and then physical activity afterwards.

That is NO rule,
That is common sense,
if you go swimming straight after you eat, You are more than likely to get stomach cramps, and possibly drown...

I believe this rule applies to almost anything. Sex, exercise, sleeping. You should give the food a time to settle into the digestive process & the body needs to adjust to the extra it now has inside.

when you eat, a great deal of energy goes into digesting your food...that is why people get 'food coma' after big meals. so the rule is not an old wives tale and it is better to be safe than sorry when drowning is involved.

Its something parents say to take a break....they take you to the pool and feed you when they are sick of watching you and then tell you that you have to sit for 15-30 minutes before swimming...ha ha

its actually true. when you eat it is best to avoid physical activity because you get side cramps. havent you ever eaten luch in school and ran the mile run right after? your side gets cramps.
but it is frequently used by parents as an excuse not to watch you swim anymore. but just jump in, youll be just fine

It's uncomfortable if you lap swim soon after you eat. If you are playing around, I don't think it matters much.
