Actually the HG is far from being obscure. The Father, God, Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost are what is called the Trinity, 3 in one. When Jesus died he sent the Holy Ghost. If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ then the Holy Ghost resides within you and can guide you in all things. The Holy Ghost is awesome.

The Holy Ghost was described by Jesus as a counselor. Paul said the Holy Ghost directs our prayers when we don't know what to pray. The Holy Ghost is also what ascended on the apostles on Pentacost. What is the Holy Ghost? I can't really explain it other than to say it's real, and it's your closest link to God, but IS God at the same time.
Or, if you are an antagonist, "he's something made up to control the population". I don't buy that one though

At the time that the trinity of god, jesus, and the HG were declared to be gods (around 325 AD), the idea was this: The Roman Empire at the time had numerous religions all vying with each other, though the Christians appeared to be stronger (which is why they were chosen as the "main" religion), but there were powerful minor sects that believed in gods born of virgins, men who became gods, and so on, so it was decided to include some of the elements of the minor religions in the main religion--jesus was declared the son of god and a god (before that he was just a human), mary was declared to be a pure virgin (because gods can't be born of impure, ordinary women) to represent the feminine side of the godhead and a titbit for the goddess worshippers to induce them to join Christians, and the holy spirit was also added as the feminine side of the godhead itself, because the holy spirit is a sort of feminine emotional being. I guess you can pray to all three (and Catholics also pray to Mary), but why deal with the vice-presidents (jesus and the holy spirit) when you can talk directly to the big chief (god)?

The Holy Ghost is another aspect of God. To explain how He is three different, distinct, individuals; but the same 'single' God, is not something He cared to explain to us...so any explinations of this would be man's assumptions with no facts to support it.
Basically, the Holy Spirit is a peice of God that He gives us, to dwell within His children. It is described as a teacher and a guide for us, it intercedes for us with God and utters the things that we cannot put into words.
To explain it more than that would be to assume I know all the ins and outs of God, and...unfortunately...none of us do.

The Holy Ghost is part of the Holy Trinity, and like Jesus, to Christians he is another form of G-d. Another way for G-d to do goodwill on earth

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. I'm surprised to hear you say you aren't on speaking terms with Him, since He lives within the heart of every Christian.

The Holy Ghost lives within us and prays for us (intercedes) when we don't know what to say. It also allows us to be able to understand and take God's word into our lives.

The Holy Ghost is the light of Christ we all possess that helps us discern what is right from what is wrong,.we know at the age of 8 as to what is right and what is wrong most of the time..we know that hitting people is wrong..we know that taking cookies to a neighbor is good...etc..The Holy Ghost teaches us what we should do..if we listen to him...we distance ourselves from him (not the other way around) when we make poor decisions..

you know that you have read something that is true..because he will confirm that it is...IF you have a humble heart and are teachable..

He will prompt you to pray..he will prompt you to read the scriptures...if you allow him to have that effect on you...
