The answer is neither. Carbs and fats are both a NECESSARY nutrient. ANY food in excessive amounts are not good for you. There is a plethora of information available on "good" and "bad" fats. Some destroy your arteries, some actually clean your blood and replace the bad fats, as well as lower cholesterol (such as flax seed oils). Omega 3's and 6's are well known for their health benefits. Vitamins A,D,E & K cannot be absorbed or used by your body if there is no fat in your diet.
Carbs are also good for you, in balance. Your brain cannot function without carbohydrates. It is largely composed of fat and only burns carbs for fuel. In times of starvation, the body can break down proteins and fats for fuel, but it essentially turns them into carbs and "discards" the chemical elements that make them into proteins and fats. The main difference between protein and carb is nitrogen. If you eat too much protein, your body coverts most of the protein to carbs and "wastes" the nitrogen. Bad news is that it's hard on your liver and kidneys. Most people who lose weight on high-protein diets do so because, in the long run, they are still eating less calories than they used to. And yes, it does take more calories to digest proteins than carbs - at the expense of your internal organs. Nevermind the incredible amount of free radical damage that happens to your body, creating billions of unstable, pre-cancerous cells. To this date, the most successful diet program on the planet is still Weight Watchers, which teaches a program of balanced carbs, proteins and fats.

Carbs without real and significant fiber is the enemy! Carbs by themselves is not the problem.... carbs for carbs sake is a problem. Carbs from a big giant piece of chocolate cake is decidedly different than a box of Triscuits.
Just like there are different types of fats.

Generally ( exccept omega fats) are worse than carbs, however the opposite is true if you are diebetic. But to many or much fat can clog the veins and arteries and effect the heart.
