Up his exercise levels, give him fun things to do (like Karate) in addition to getting him to do more work around the house.
Then replace the high calorie foods in his diet with lower cal versions. They have 100 cal packs of nearly every snack now. Help him fill up on healthy foods at mealtimes. Sell it as a life style change NOT a diet. And give him you support don't use insults. Boosting his confidence will help him lose the weight.
Be sure to get him a complete check up by the family doctor. Sometimes weight gain is caused by things other than just over eating. He might be diabetic or something else.

Fat camp is a great idea because those counsellors also help kids psychologically.
Some ideas:
At home, get rid of all the junk food. Replace sweets with fruit. Get rid of all soda. Offer fruit juice w/seltzer water instead. Limit the portion size of food that you serve. The YMCAs have low cost sports camps for kids, if you have to work. Otherwise, keep active. Go for walks with him, ride bike with him, introduce him to a new type of sport or activity. Don't take him food shopping with you. Don't give in if he wants a burger or a pizza. Offer low cal alternatives. Limit time spent sitting in front of the tv or computer. If he's interested in food or cooking, maybe you could both learn how to cook low cal. Let him cook and come up with creative recipes and reward him with a trip to the movie (w/o the buttered popcorn). Try and be positive and make it fun.

This site has everything you need to know. It is mostly NOT your fault, if your son needs to lose weight. The way you have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) soon surpassing hunger and infectious disease. So you are a victim of this pandemic (epidemic).
Your son and you need to re-learn how to eat. Find out about fastest way to lose weight, slow ways to lose weight, raw foods and anti-water. Learn everything on site below so you can understand how food and exercise affects your body. Do this and you can be thin. Do this not, and you will remain part of the biggest pandemic in all of history. Due to this pandemic, for the first time in 100 years, the children of Americans have a lower life expectancy than their parents.

You could start by cooking low cal meals and low fat for him. Don't buy all the sweet treats and Potato chips. All the stuff teenagers love to eat alot of. Switch to diet soda. Encourage him to drink more water(just plain old water) by keeping alot of ice and maybe some lemon wedges for flavor. Keep alot of raw veggies around for snacks instead.

Watch the fat grams and calorie intake, then get that kid on a bike or take some walks at night with him.
