My friend's (very abusive) boyfriend doesn'y smoke, yet he claims that he got lung cancer from second hand smoke and that he only has a few months to live.

I think there's just about a 99.99% chance that he is just saying this so my friend won't leave him, what do you think?

I mean, come on, he's 16, doesn't smoke, has lung cancer, and has only MONTHS to live? Doesn't sound very likely to me.

I agree. They would be treating very agressively if this were true. Is he sick? Does he cough a lot? Any hair loss? Bruising? Frequent hospital visits? Surgery? Sounds to me like a play.

Actually, there are some childhood tumors in the chest cavity that aren't primary lung cancers. He could have a lymphoma in the lungs for instance. Other possibilities are neuroblastomas or sarcomas, and although a primary lung carcinoma would be rare in this age group, it is not impossible.

As far as what is probable, I would tend to agree with the other responses. Based on the information you have provided, it seems more likely that this individual is lying about his diagnosis.

He could be manipulating your friend. He could, however, have lung cancer. Remember, Dana Reeves (Superman, Christopher Reeves' wife) recently died of lung cancer and she never smoked either. People can get lung cancer from second hand smoke and other environmental hazards. Like someone else said, is he sick? Is he losing his hair? Either way, if he's abusing her, she needs to leave...like yesterday!

Well one thing is for sure, he will be found it in a matter of months. As far as getting lung cancer from second hand smoke, how can he know that? (And no, I want more proof on this one).

if he is making this up so she wont leave him, he is a very sick individual. But lung cancer can occur at any age, and the life expectancy is different for different people.

He could be exactly the creep you suspect he is. Abusers manipulate their victims in whatever way they can. I don't know, maybe he does have lung cancer, but either way, try to gently coax your friend into getting out of this relationship. I don't know the best way to do it...you don't want to drive her further closer to him if she won't admit his behavior's wrong, but she needs out and you know that. Please at least try talking to her. I hope for the best for both of you.
