The ones who long for "the end of the world" are those that believe that a better world, without sickness, death, and wickedness, is what will follow.
When the scriptures speak of the end of the "world", world in this case means the current "era", "age", or "order of things", and not the destruction of the physical planet.
2 Peter 3:5-7 “There were heavens from of old and an earth standing compactly out of water and in the midst of water by the word of God; and by those [means] the world of that time suffered destruction when it was deluged with water. But by the same word the heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire and are being reserved to the day of judgment and of destruction of the ungodly men.”
Just like the "world" that was destroyed by the flood was not the planet, but the world of ungodly men, so it is the same the next time around.

In reference to the first person. I am a big Tool fan, and can tell you that the lyrics in that song are in reference only to California washing away. Anyways, to answer your question, I think that mainstream reigious folks are a lot of times a little to eager to leave this world. I mean who REALLY knows what happens after you die, or if God even exists. It all makes my head spin when I think of all the possibilities.

Well, 2000 years have gone by, and still no savior. Before that, people eagerly awaited Mithra's return, and he never came back, either. I think it's safe to say that your great-great-great grandchildren will live to see many Blue Ridge sunrises. :o)

I believe this is about people that are a bit hateful, or so it seems to me. I've heard people talk like this, and the dumb thing is, they think they'll be the ones still living while most of the world has died. I heard one guy say, less people is better, like he would be glad if so many other people died. Pretty petty, if you ask me.

because the world is falling apart...
Pollution, war, crime, etc
It's no where close to what it use to be...So it's doing the future some help....It'll only get worse.
