If you are going to do the work yourself, go to your local building code office first to get the requirements. Doors between garage and dwelling are usually required to have a fire rating, and in some cases, the garage floor must be at least 4 inches below the dwelling floor (carbon monoxide fumes won't float into the house that way). The building code office is your best source of accurate, up to date information.

You will have to open the wall up wider than the door. It is possible to do most of the messy work from one side. Make sure theres no electric or plumbing in there. Open it up and have a good look to see what you will need...measure everything. You can cover it temporarily with plywood and nails or screws, but don't leave it too long like that. Once you have the opening framed in you can get a pre-hung door...they are easier to install. Here is an article all about framing...

Wear a paper mask for the dust...some walls have alot of dust in them.

Youre better off with a panel door for security reasons. It means that it is made of solid wood. The standard height of the door is 7 feet and, the width is between 2' 6" - 3 feet, depending on your requirement. If you intend to bring in large objects through this door, make it wider than 2'6".

Head to Lowes or other home improvement store and talk to the guys and gals in the millwork dept. You must have a steel door between the house and garage. It is not an easy DIY task though. If you aren't confident enough to do it yourself, hire a contractor.
