I'm not sure what you mean by "etc." but you should probably work in Central Park, the Empire State Building, a walk around Greenwich Village, the New York Stock Exchange.
More time? Get out to the Bronx and catch a game at Yankee Stadium. If you don't have time to get to the Bronx Zoo (HIGHLY recommended) at least get to the Central Park Zoo.
Take a train down to Coney Island and walk on the boardwalk eating some Nathan's, take a ride on the Cyclone and spend a cool hour at the Aquarium.
Times Square in the evening for the lights. And don't forget to walk around inside Grand Central Terminal.

I agree that you must see Central Park and all its special places (Belvedere Castle, the Rambles, the Zoo), but it'd be unique for you to rent a rowboat from the Boathouse and go around the lake where turtles will be sunning on rocks and mallard ducks, swans, Canada goose might be swimming in the lake. (Most people don't associate NYC and nature.)
At the Metropolitan Museum of Art (eastside by Central Park on Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street), you will be awed by the Temple of Dendur in the Egyptian wing. So peaceful yet magnificent. Throw a penny or 2 into the reflection pool and make a wish or 2.
Another impressive/photographic sight would be to see the many international flags flying in unison under a blue sky, in front of the United Nations (42nd-46th Street on First Avenue).

Here are some ideas of what you can do. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.
CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.
WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

Go to Bell Blvd. in Bayside Queens tomorrow night. There's a bar called First Edition. When you get there, ask the bartender if Andy is there. If he is tell him he's a fat bastard and should grow up and stop hanging out in that bar. Tell him he's getting too old to pick up the young hotties that hang out on Bell Blvd. Then buy him a beer and a shot and tell him J told you to tell him that.

* If you are tourist first visiting New York City, seeing a Broadway show isn't as important because of all the sight seeing and walking you'll be doing and you'll probably be exhausted afterwards anyway. Besides a lot of New Yorkers have never seen a Broadway show, so you are not missing out on that one. The tickets to any Broadway show are more expensive during the tourist season. If you really want to see a Broadway show and are not picky about which shows you want to see, you can stand in line at the "TKTS" booth in times square but the lines are pretty long, though, and you can find yourself standing in line for hours if it gets pretty busy. They are only for unsold seats at random Broadway shows for the day and they accept cash only, if I remember well. They are cheaper than if you were to buy them at the facility but it doesn't guarantee that your seats will be great.
Hope this helps! And enjoy your trip! :)
