Because the statement of "it takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master" is so accurate. Yes, it's a cliche but it's very, very true!

So many reasons, but here's a few:
1) It's a game that seems to be about luck on the surface, but is actually about skill.
2) It's a game filled with nuance: observation, behavior, habits, the story that a person tells through his action. Can we tell the truth from a lie, especially when under pressure? Can we tell an indecipherable lie and get away with it?
3) It's possible for rank amateurs to do well anywhere. Witness the run of Steve Dannemann in last year's World Series of Poker Main Event. Self described as 4th best in his own home poker game, Dannemann ran all of the way to 2nd place and a 4.5 million dollar payday.
So, yes, poker is addictive. Good luck with your addiction!

As a member of a state Gaming Control Board and avid private poker player, I have not seen a single poker game become so popular in years. Part of this popularity is the TV coverage which shows and explains to viewers how easy the game is to play. It also shows how bluffing and chip management play into the equation. It's a quick game and you can have more players in the game than in 7-card stud for instance. It's exciting, especially when the final river card is revealed. The "All In" factor really adds some pucker-power. Keep your eye on the other players!

Aross has an excellent answer, but he has neglected one key point. For some peolple, gambling causes a release of endorphins and other neuro-transmitters in the brain (i.e., norepinephrine). It's similar to the reaction other people have to addictive drugs. For me it has to do with the risk of losing money as opposed to the satisfaction of outsmarting someone and winning money for doing it! I have an addictive personality in general, so I have to stick to small-stakes poker, but I play about four to five hours per day. I've also read a dozen or more books on poker, so I win pretty consistently.

Ask me later I am in the middle of a tournament.
No, seriously itis addictive because it is a fast game that can be played instantly regardless of skill level . . . I compare it to racketball. Ah, but to be good, well that is always just out of reach.
