The purpose and result of baptism varies from denomination to denomination. For some, it is a guarantee of an afterlife; for others it is a symbolic cleansing of past sins, and a symbol of being born again. Or it can be thought of as a combination of these ideas.
The idea of baptism in the Christian tradition comes out of the Jewish system of ritual bathing in a mikveh for ceremonial impurity. Individuals who violated the laws of purity by touching a corpse, blood or anything designated unclean, were to bath in a souce of "living water" --fresh running water in order to remove the impurity. Here is a website that talks about this Jewish ritual:

Although I do not agree with the original sin portion of these dear brothers and sister answer, I do agree that baptism is essential to being assured of your salvation. Jesus himself tells us in the /great commission that we are to Baptize them in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit. Baptism is the symbolic reenactment of Death, Burial ,Cleansing and Resurrection. We are laid down in the water and rise again a new spiritual person. Sprinkling a few drops is not the same as being immersed. Also notice that Peter said " Repent and be Baptized". An infant cannot repent. So infant baptism is not scriptural. Although dedicating a baby to God is a beatiful sentiment, baptism is much more.

Water baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. Show me one person that is born again, I'll show you one that has been emerged in the water. Water baptism is not essential for salvation, note the thief on the cross next to Jesus who believed on the Lord Jesus but did not get down to be baptized by water but the Lord Jesus said, " To day shalt thou be with me in paradise" St. Luke 23:42-43.
There is also an inward baptism by fire or purging by the Holy Ghost, Matthew 3:11. True repentance and humility.

The water is a sign of the washing of regeneration by the Holy Spirit. The water does not cleanse sin but is symbolic. Only Christ by His Spirit makes us clean form sin.
1 Peter 3:21
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Water Baptism, as taken from Scripture is a public decleration of a choice to follow Jesus.
Repenting of sins in this context is Salvation, the next step would be the public decleration
Baptism has nothing to do with salvation. Unfortunately, the idea that baptism ensures salvation is incorrect. No where is that found in scripture.

Baptism by water is meant to be the outwardly showing of what has taken place on the inside. It has no actual spiritual meaning. we do however need to be baptized because We are told to follow Christ and he was baptized. The baptism we should look forward to is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This takes place when the Holy Spirit comes upon us and takes control it is awesome. Thank you for the sincere question.

The purpose of being baptised with water is to wash away original sin.
The passage: to let us know that Baptism begins our lives new..that through the Holy Spirit, we can reconcile ourselves with the Church...and be forgiven by God. This is the promise that Jesus made....why He was sent to Earth...to save all of us from sin..to beat death, and temptation.

The purpose of water baptism is to wash all the sins that u have ever committed in ur life to be washed away.
The Purpose of Water Bapism in Jesus Name.
1. Remission of sins which is the removal of sins
-Mt.26:28
"For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins"
-Lu.3:3

-Lu.24:47
"And that repentence and remission of sins should be preached in HIS NAME among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
-Acts 2:38
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of u in THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We shall be baptized in "THE NAME OF JESUS"
Why?
Because he said it in his word.
For in the Bible it states in
Acts 4:12
"Neither is their salvation in anyother for their is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we must be saved.
ONLY THROUGH CHRIST WE HAVE SALVATION.

If you repent and go to God in TheWay He proscribes then you will be forgiven. To be baptized is to make a public profeession and demonstration of your faith and commitment to your Lord and Master.
This promis of Salvation is made to all, "...for all whom The Lord our God will call"
The Baptizm dose not save it is a testimony to what the saved has recieved form God.
