They wore leather helmets for head protection, and warmth. Also, the radio earpieces were usually built into the helmets.

The "helmets" that many pilots wore was more to keep their heads warm than to really protect them like a modern motorcycle helmet. The leather was fur lined, like their jackets, because it gets really cold when you get up in altitude.

Thomas is wrongly incorrect, Hollywood is ideal. maximum Kamikaze pilots wore headbands with prayers and dedications written on them. they did not placed on safe practices helmets yet some wore a leather cap to keep them warmth of their unheated aeroplanes. This wasn't affectation. A freezing pilot don't have were given to his objective.

actually they did not wear a "helmet". But the head coverings were made of leather. It was the head-gear of the day
