Yes.... start by asking YOURSELF questions. Know exactly what you want - don't let the recruiter talk you into something. Research all trades, all options. Ask yourself... what do I want to do??? Don't limit yourself to the Navy. Think airforce/army/marines. Want to travel??? They will all bring you across the world...the question is how.

Know yourself. Make the choices based on that alone.
This life, and a military life, is purely what YOU make it.

Psst... don't listen to the ignorance. Harassment and Racism exsist in every corner of the world. McDonalds to Microsoft to Military. The difference between them is policy.

Make sure you get a good score on you asvab. Get into a schooling. Have it on your contract that you are guaranteed a school. Life is not easy out on ship. Well life will be hard until you gain rank. So do your best to gain rank. As fast as you can. Have a good idea what kind of ship you want to be on. Be careful cause some of the little ones don't have birthing for women. So you can't go to that ship. Make sure you do good at you school. They go by best in class when it comes to picking your orders.

what rate will you qualify for based upon your ASVAB scores.
what are your opportunites for education
what will the first year in the Navy look like
what rates are most in demand

Ask them for a specific job that you can do, not, I REPEAT NOT SEAMAN APPRENTECE. Pick a rate, don't go in unrated.
