The heavy are often the best. The green exterior ones. I like the seedless and the Sugar Daddy varieties. Buy a plant or two, and put it into a safe corner of your garden, where you wont step, incase they're are some melons in it. The white part? I've always heard it's to be avoided.

The oldest method of determining which is the ripest is still a dependable way of selecting one.
Simply thump on a few. The greener ones are more dense and a make a solid sound. The riper ones sound hollow.
With a little practice you'll get really good at this.

seedless ripe
weight makes no difference in taste
watermelons need good soil and space obviously. watermelon seeds and i have never heard of anyone using it on there face.
