I think of a Christian as simply striving to do what's right and achieve what God wants you to achieve. It is not hard to know what to do in certain situations and doing them is what a Christian should do. Just pray and read your bible and you will grow gradually into a strong Christian faith.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that the Father is the one that helps us to walk and talk. The way I describe it is that He takes us from the moment we ask Him into our life and He changes our Heart. Each day is a new change.... Read the bible often because that will help you, along with praying and going to church.. I believe firmly that you need a mentor. I mentor new Christians and that helps to have someone to pray with you and love on you and help you through those tough times. SO, if you do not know of anyone, get to a church and ask the Pastor if he knows of some one who could help you... The Christian walk is a daily walk, I will pray for you. This is an awesome time for you.

A real true Christian is like everyone else. They struggle with unbelief, temptations, bad days and bad moods, just like you and I. A real true christian is the one who gets up everyday, and despite yesterdays failures, still believes in Jesus Christ, and believes he is forgiven, and is truly a "work in progress". God sees the "heart", The Blood, and his son. That is what makes a "real true christian".
Please, dont worry about how you should act, talk, or be. Just BE BORN AGAIN, READ GODS WORD, AND SEEK HIM(pray) CONSTANTLY. He will show you the rest...

Just say to God what you've written down in yahoo, that you want a new start with God. Don't contrive anything. Be yourself before God and tell Him how you feel. The prodigal son came back to his father thinking he would just be like a hired servant with no loving relationship again with his father because he had done his own thing and gone his own way, but, when the father saw his son coming home way in the distance, he ran to him and gave him such a welcome, that the son was in no doubt of how much he was loved.
Jesus died for you, that is how much He loves you. He revived from death, and now lives in heaven. So He can hear your request to want to belong to Him. Simply ask Him,that you want to be born again and have a relationship with Him. He'll guide you with the rest.

In one word, love. If you show true love to everyone then these characteristics will show through you. Also, the Holy Spirit is what really changes us. He gives us a renewed heart, mind, and spirit. The fruit of the Holy Spirit, which is what you are referring to, kindness, gentleness, love, peace, etc... are a natural display of a Christian life. They aren't forced through. Everything will happen in time if you are a real Christian. Life is a process, during the process you display gradually a life purifying itself from sin and becoming more and more holy, until the end of your life, which with your Resurrection, you will be made perfect.
Give it time. Trust in God and you will be changed in the likeness of our creator, the same likeness that Adam and Eve first had, and the one that is destined for all of His creation.

In Romans 10:9-10 the Bible says that " If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus , and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." In order to be saved you have to believe that Jesus died for your sins and also that God the Father on the third day raised Him from the grave, you have to say this. Pray this out loud with me. Lord, I recognize and admit that I am a sinner. I turn away from my sins and confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that Jesus is Your son and You raised Him from the dead. Amen.
The word christian means to be Christ like and mainly what He did was love on people, so read your Bible and find out what Christ did and do that. Find a Bible teaching church to attend and serve there faithfully.God loves you and I love you, don't give up.
If you don't have a church home you can check out my pastor @ creflodollarministries.org. If you have high speed internet you can watch him live on Sun.s 7:30 A.M. & 11:00 A.M.

How to tell a "real true Christian"...
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
John 13:35 By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
These words were spoken by Jesus Christ. We know a person is a "real true Christian", a disciple of Christ, by their love.
Pray to God to help you to be the kind and loving person He wants you to be.

The best example of a true Christian would be Mother Theresa. She dedicated her life to the service of God by helping the people noone else would help.

Looks like some of the answers are pretty good. A Christian is one who follows Christ, so follow Him. He has laid out the path in His Word. It is first of all believing, then works, not the other way around so seek to know Him first.
May the Lord grant your desire

Well, it doesn't come down to an act. It comes down to faith. If you can say that you truly believe Christ died for your sins, and you need his forgiveness, then you are back with God. Things that help you grow:
reading your bible
attending small groups/bible studies
praying
meditating on positive verses in the bible (meditating is like worrying, only about something good)
