Golf In It’s Proper Perspective

The following is not to offend tennis, basketball, football, or soccer fans. It is, rather, an attempt to put everything in its proper perspective.
Ever wonder why golf is growing in popularity and why people who don't even play go to tournaments or watch it on tv?
These truisms may shed some light:
Golf is an honorable game, with the overwhelming majority of players being honorable people who don't need referees. Golfers don't have some of their players in jail every week. Golfers don't scratch their privates on the golf course. Golfers don't kick dirt on, or throw bottles at, officials or other players.
Professional golfers are compensated in direct proportion to how well they play. Golfers don't get per diem and two seats on a charter flight when they travel between tournaments. Golfers don't hold out for more money, or demand for new contracts, because of another player's deal.
Professional golfers don't demand that the taxpayers pay for the course on which they play. When golfers make a mistake, nobody is there to cover for them or back them up.
The PGA Tour raises more money for charity in one year than the National football league does in two- with fewer players. You can watch the best golfers in the world up close, at any tournament, including the majors, all day, everyday for $25 or $30. The cost for a seat in the nosebleed section at the Super Bowl will cost around $300 or more.
In golf you cannot fail 70% of the time and make $9 million a season, like the best baseball hitters (.300 batting average) do.
Golf doesn't change its rules to attract fans.
Golfers have to adapt to an entirely new playing area each week.
Golfers keep their clothes on whole being interviewed.
Golf doesn't have free agency.
Tiger Woods can hit a golf ball three times as far as Barry Bonds can hit a baseball.
Finally, here's a slice of golf history you might enjoy.
Know why full length golf courses have 18 holes and not 20, or 10 or even a dozen? During a discussion among the club membership board at St. Andrews in 1858, one of the members pointed out it takes exactly 18 shots to polish off a bottle of scotch. By limiting himself to only one shot of scotch per hole, the Scot figured a round of golf was finished when the scotch ran out.

Now you know.

The first answer you received was "excellent"; however, on a lighter side, the reason I watch is because I learn from the pros. I am a 62 year old female who took up the game after the kids left home. I still work, but went on a Contract basis in order that I could play tournaments and play more golf. I watch golf because I learn from the pros. When I attend the tournaments in our town, I play unbelieveably well following those tournaments. I attempt to minnick the players swings and course management. I started at about a 35 handicap about 8 years ago, and was recently down to a 13 handicap .I have taken about 3 lessons during the last 8 years. I am a visual person and I find it to be an easier way for me to learn and improve my game. It is my golf school!

Wow, some really good answers here. But anyway, here's my opinion.

I used to find it really boring ... until I gave golf a try.
I went to a driving range, and boy ... is it difficult to hit the ball??!
The pro certainly make it look so easy ... but let me tell you, it's hard!

So, after that day on the driving range, I began to like golf. I don't know why, I guess it's the challenge. The feeling that you get when you can hit a ball nicely.

Then I began to learn more about the rules and other stuff about golf ... then I went to watch it on television ... and there I was ... enjoying it! Wow ...

Now, eventhough I rarely play golf, cause it's expensive and I'm just no good at it ... I love watching golf!

I watch golf because it is just about the only pro sport not populated by prima donna whiners (well maybe Colin Montgomerie). The sport has integrity and so do its players. And I defy ANY sporting event to rival a Major or better yet - the Ryder Cup (when it's close) for excitement.

Because golf takes the most skill out of any sport to play. You have to actually be good to be successful. Unlike other sports where you can be successful just based on your height, weight, strenght, etc.
