I'll give you a short answer, but I think it's better if you read it yourself http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/phytochemicals/garlic/ . The compounds in garlic (organosulfur compounds - the aromatic components of crushed garlic) have been postulated to have beneficial effects on heart disease, inflammation, cancer and atherosclerosis. The link provided here will give some more of the scientific evidence to backup these claims, but it is simply the reactivity of sulfur compounds that are thought to be the heart of the mechanism of garlic. While these compounds have had surprising effects in a laboratory setting, in human beings and research animals the data is less convincing. There are very few positive links between garlic consumption and the prevention of disease.

Japanese and Chinese herbal physicians frequently prescribed garlic as a cure for hypertension.

And Indian practitioners, guided by a centuries-old medical manual known as the Charaka-Samhita, suggested garlic to alleviate heart disease and various forms of painful arthritis.
