It is not in the doing of the deeds that elevates faith, it is a gauge in which you can use to see if a persons faith is real or not. Just as the body without the soul is dead, faith with out deeds is also dead.
Quote from Jesus younger brother James. Saying one has faith means nothing in and of itself. I can say, "Hey look at me I'm a Christian." and it I don't live by the teaching that I claim then it means nothing. However if I don't say a word about my faith and just go and do what Christ taught, then the deeds themself speak louder than anything I could ever say.
My faith is about my walk, my relationship, my deeds. Judge them as you wish, everything else will fall into place.

Spiritual elevation, I don't believe so. You do good because it is in your heart to do so. You should not look to receive anything from it. It can be very vain and selfish if you do it to receive something in return, even from God. Love is what love does.
Now to grow spiritually, you must grow in faith and in a personal relationship with the Lord.

James 2:18
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
James 2:20
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:26
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
In a way, good deeds elevates you spiritually. You feel good about doing God's work. Because of our faith, we work... We don't necessarily work to get to heaven, make sense? Our good deeds alone is not or will ever be good enough to get us into heaven. However, per Revelation, we are judged by our works:
Revelation 20:12
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Revelation 20:13
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

not me. I don't believe that good deeds do anything but are signs that you have faith, but not the major/only sign that you have faith

You can do good works and not have love but you cannot have love and not do good works. Good works are a result of our love of God. We are God's hands here on Earth and we should use them as God would.

People believe it because it makes them feel better about themselves and the person who they are.
