If you have an idea of what you want, you can do a price search online and choose the online store that best gives you what you want in a surround sound system purchase.

This is a hard question to answer because there really isn't a correct answer to it, so this really is just some advice. First, know your budget and be ready to go a little over. Your shopping experience should start with a knowledgeable sales person that can explain and answer your questions in laymans terms and not talk over your head with techno speak. Second you want to look for somewhere you can demo the gear you are interested in in a comfortable environment, speakers on a shelf down a isle isn't the best way to demo speakers. Next bring your own music, you want to have music you are familiar with and some stores won't let you do this or they are not set up for it. Next what is their return policy? If you bring home your new gear and it doesn't sound right or even work with your decor can you return it? The room you put it in can play a big part in sound and picture quality. Something else to think about is do they have an upgrade policy, some stores have trade up policies you can take advantage of. Lastly, your big box stores (Best Buy, Circuit City) are good for some things but don't be afraid of the smaller specialty shops. They are not just for the high end crowd, they will have the same deals if not better and some you can actually demo the gear in your home. So, plan a day, get a stack of CDs, and enjoy.

Definately go to your local audio video specialty shop. These places have more knowledge of the products they sell than Best Buy or Circuit City and they will be able to give you support for the product and installation without charging you a ton of additional money like the two above do. Plus, the product offerings at local shops are usually of a higher grade than the big chian retailers. That's another down-side to buying online...you may get the cheapest price, but you may be getting b-stock items or items from an unauthorized seller. If you buy from an unauthorized seller you won't be able to get your product fixed under warranty by the manufacturer. Plus if something goes wrong with the unit or you need help setting it up, how is someone across the continent going to help you with it? That's just my philosophy.

It really depends on what level of perfomance you are after. If you really want the best quality, go to a store that specializes in High Fidelity audio components. You should select a surround system they same way you would select a good music system. If you're not into that, then go to a consumer electronics store that offers the best prices. If possible, listen to it first.

depends on what you are looking for, i've went to best buy, circuit city, walmart and tweeters and found that they have limited supplies i couldn't find the ones that i need. if you're looking for a startup set then BB, CC and tweeter will do.
