Birds will lay eggs whether they mate or not. It could be that something in your hen's environment has put her into breeding mode. Usually, at least with my guys, it's leaving the lights on an hour longer for 3 days. Sometimes it's as simple as leaving a newspaper over a corner of her cage and forgetting it there for a few days!

It's best if you leave her with the eggs. She'll lose interest in them after a month. If she did manage to mate with the male ( some parrots will cheat on their mates!), expect some babies in about 2 - 2 and a half weeks. Until then, feed mom high protein and high calcium foods such as broccoli, cooked tofu and even small amounts of chicken and tuna. It will even help if you get a small package of hand feeding formula and sprinkle her food with a bit of the stuff. Even if she doesn't hatch chicks, the extra nutrients will help her body recover from producing so many eggs.

If there are babies, keep feeding mom warm food and the hand feeding formula. If the other birds start picking on her, remove her and the chicks. Baby birds are a LOT of hard work, but they're worth it. You may want to contact a local parrot club to see if they can give you any advise. There's often Budgie breeders in clubs and there's bound to be one person who can give you tips.

Good luck!

YEAH FOR THE EGGS.

Please bear in mind that parakeets can lay eggs without mating. This just means that they will not have babies inside and eventually you will have to remove them.

Wait it out. Just give the bird the cance to do its thing. If you have a strong bond with your bird, reach your hand in and remove an egg. Hold it up to the light and look for a dark area. If you find one, then more than likely you are going to have a baby.

If these eggs do not hatch you might want to remove the nesting box. Without a safe place to lay eggs, your bird will be less likely. Laying eggs takes a lot out of a bird.

Hope this helps. :)

Parakeets do sometimes lay "dud" eggs...mine DID mate and some of the eggs hatched, but some never did. If you hold them up to a light, you might be able to tell...the infertile ones look much more pale and maybe even slightly transparent.

PS I read the part about the dud eggs in a few parakeet books, I'm not just assuming it from my own experience. :)

I have a female parakeet and she lays eggs. I even changed her food and the vet says it's normal for her to do so. Let the eggs be and see if they hatch. Do you have them all in the same cage? That is a bit of info you left out. Good Luck.

My family used to breed parakeets!

It's very possible for a female parakeet to lay an egg even when she hasn't mated... it just means that she is VERY fertile. This could happen if you are feeding her a lot of protein.
A good way to check if she has mated is to look at the eggs... GENTLY hold them up to the light and see if there is a shadow in any of them. If there IS a shadow, then she did indeed mate.
If you have anymore questions... feel free to contact me ^_^

Wait it out.. if they hatch then obviously she mated.. I don't think parakeets are like hens.. hens will lay the eggs whether they're fertilized or not.. i think with other species of birds... the eggs actually MUST be fertilized in order for them to lay them.

yay for the new daddy!

I raised cockatiels, but no longer. I say wait, if you want babies, but you need to move her away from the other birds, especially if what say about them being a couple is true. If the eggs hatch they might hurt the babies. If the eggs don't hatch within the timeframe you will need to take them from her.

Candle the eggs, of course! Take them very gently, take them into a dark room and hold them up to a bright light. If you see veins, an air sac and a dark spot, where the veins are coming from, you have babies! Most parrots do not lay eggs unless they are fertile.
