I had 2 cats when pregnant with my first child and had no serious problems. I always wore rubber gloves when cleaning the litter box and after my daughter was born we kept the cat out of her nursery at all times. Our oldest cat was jealous of her and we soon learned that we couldn't leave the car seat laying around because he would urinate in it. Other than that both kitties and daughter got along fine. My daugters first word was me-meow (I know it isn't really a word but it sure was cute). As babies become toddlers the cats learn very quickly to avoid them at all costs unless the want to be pinched squeezed and loved. Good luck to you.

I had 3 cats and two dogs while I was pregnant. (My husband cleaned the little box) And I had no problems and neither does my daughter who is now 2 1/2. In fact, 2 of the cats passed away soon after she was born (they were very old) and we got two 6 week old kittens last May. So we still have 3 cats. And they're all fine. They get along great. My daughter teases them a little but then they just run away.
You'll see when the baby arrives ... the cats will be a little curious for a few days and then they'll get over it. Unless your baby turns out to be allergic, relax ... there's no reason to get rid of your cats.
And that 'sucking the breath' out of a baby is nothing but a myth. It's not even physically possible.
Best of luck & Congratulations on your new addition!

Actually, just be careful. Especially if they are long haired. If you deal with the cat litterbox (which you shouldn't at all due to your pregnancy) use a hand sanitizer immediately, vacuum once a day, twice in hot weather, and keep the cats out of the crib. They may not intentionally hurt the child and will most likely try to cuddle up to the baby, but still accidents happen. If you don't already have the crib set up, do so and teach the kitties that it is off limits. Yes, speaking as a cat owner and a Daddy.

I know you love your cats, but Some of the other answers are right, they can get jealous once a baby comes. As a cat owner myself I'd never tell you to get rid of all your cats, but you may want to thin them out a little to reduce the jealousy thing, as well as some of potential health risks - for instance, you don't know if your baby will be allergic to cats or not, and it's alot easier to keep say 2 cats away from baby then all 4, and if the worst happens and you Have to get rid of them, 2 are alot easier to find new homes for. I have to say though that I HATE it when people tell new moms that their cats will kill their babies. Its true that you shouldn't handle cat litter till a few weeks after the baby is born due to the ammonia content in cat urine - thats a chemical and all chemicals should be watched when you're pregnant. After the baby is born - lets face it, you know your kitties. If one is likely to be a danger because of his/her affectionate (or jealous) nature or love of milk, you should know it by now and either try training, or like one person did, keep kitty out of the nursery. Cats have a bad rap around babies because lots of cats have been present when a baby death occured - or in some cases an overly affectionate cat smothered the baby. In short, I suggest either finding new homes for a few of them, or like my sister did, see if a relative or friend will watch the kitty until you think it's safe to have around the baby, introducing them gradually so you can see for yourself if one of them is likely to become a danger to the baby. Also, consider that you will have alot less time to devote to your cats with the baby around, and removing one or two will help keep the remaining cats from being too jealous of yet another thing taking up your time.

Well if your cats are mean, don't let them near the baby. If your cats are not declawed(to take there razor sharp nails out) again don't let them near the baby. If there cute and nice you can keep them around the baby. Oh make sure the baby is not allergic to cats. See the baby's Doctor or pediatrician in the hospital.

My brother and his family live with me and she just had a baby 2months ago.We have 3 cats in the house and none of them go near the baby at all.We all took turns cleaning the litter box so she never had to go near it.All the baby's things are covered with mesh sheets to keep the cats from getting inside of them.Cats don't go in baby's room at all.One of the cats peed on the stroller so now we keep all baby cribs, playpens etc in a room with the door shut. When you play with baby let the cats sniff her and check her out.Theywill get used to her eventually.

Give some of the cats away. The baby will take up a lot of your time and attention. Plus you don't want to accidentally step on or kick them.

Being pregnant and having cats are not a good idea,if you have a garage, try to put the cats out there to live. Cats carry feline diseases, and you can catch it and give it to your unborn baby. If you want to keep the cats please put them away from you until the baby arrives. and do not empty the liter box have someone else do it.
