Try your local shelters. Those pets are dying for a home.

You will get a free pet in the classifieds and sometimes a vet will know who has unwanted kittens. We got our cat through the classifieds in one of the free local newspapers and although she has the sweetest disposition, she came with all kinds of stuff we would rather not have (think fleas, worms, etc.). A vet will probably give you a name of someone responsible enough to care for the cat, so there is less danger of getting more than one pets at once.

Humane society and alike will generally charge you a fee (125 dollars here in VA), but their kittens come up to date on shots and other medical procedures. You might not be able to find a young kitten there though as they get adopted quickly and sometimes they will require you to adopt at least two at once to keep each other company while you are gone. I have also heard from reliable sources about people being rejected for adoption for not being home enough (40-hour work week) or because of young children, which is a little overboard, but might have been a personal quirk of the interviewer. Yes, there is an interview that needs to be done by the actual person who will own the cat and sometimes a home visit too.

I couldn't find where your area is, so no specific locations. That said, I recommend going to your local humane society or animal rescue organization; this time of year most of them have more kittens than they know what to do with. Better yet, consider adopting two so they can keep each other company.

It's true that most shelters charge an adoption fee, but it's cheaper than buying a purebred and they've usually put some effort into getting its first shots. 'Free' kittens are usually given away by people who just want to get rid of the kittens and may not have taken good care of them or their mother.

There's really no such thing as a 'free' kitten anyway. It still needs food, litter box, toys, shots, spay or neuter, and vet care if it gets sick. Compared to the life-long cost of all that, the adoption fee is minimal. Think of it as a sign of committment; experience shows that people who won't pay for the cat in the first place also won't pay for care later and are more likely to return or abandon the cat.

Go to Petfinder.com. You can search by age, animal, color, region, etc. It goes through a ton of different shelters, pet rescues, non profit organizations, etc. I found my cat through Petfinder.com even though she was in "foster care". It's a great resource and easy to use if you don't have time to visit a lot of shelters.
