The Chelsea star hostel is great and funky. There is also Central Park hostel, to get great info on hostels in NYC (and right in Manahattan) check out twizi.com they list inexpensive hostels.
There is one called the gershwin which is really great too:
There is also a site called NewYorkHostelsGuide.com. Follow the links below to get to the sites.

Check out the link. The Murray Hill Inn is about the cheapest decent place in the city. Many Brits stay there -- I live next door to it. There are tons of bars right around the corner including the Rodeo Bar with free live rockabilly. I know more bars than clubs I am past the clubbing age...

PS the hotel is close to the bar the person mentioned above.

the YMCA that the person recommend above my comment is really good.. Its well located and a great price for NYC!!
Some of my friends stayed there so I actually got to see it.
Since you are going to be here for 10 days and you might want something less expensive you can also stay at the HI NY. The location is not the best but its safe enough at night.(the YMCA area is far superior)

Bars, I love Patrick Kavanars (irish pub) they are on 3rd ave between 33 and 34th. Beers are 5 dollars and the food is great under 15 dollars.

It's better to stay at a Bed and Breakfast place in someone's apartment/home in New York City because they are CHEAPER and CLEANER than a lot of hotels and the owners are much more accomodating. When you search for ads, make sure the location is in Manhattan, if you're not sure, ask the owner-----> http://newyork.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=3&query=bed%20and%20breakfast&catAbbreviation=vac&subAreaID=1&group=H

Besides, I would avoid staying at a hotel in New York City because they are much more expensive and deceiving. You can even check out the customer reviews on any New York hotel and you'll see a lot of unsatisfied customers-----> http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Hotels.html

Sing along... YMCA! It's fun to stay at...

The West Side YMCA on the upper west side (5 West 63rd Street), right near Central Park and Columbus Circle.
It's reasonable compared to almost anyplace else in NYC, and it's in a very safe neighborhood.
