Probably, the easiest thing for you to do is to use Windows Movie Maker. It should be in your Programs listing (click START / ALL PROGRAMS). You should find it on this menu. Then, you need to connect your VCR to your computer. You need to find the connection on your VCR to do this. The connection is a "female" connection, and the port is a rectangle. If I'm not mistaken, the cable that you need to connect is called a "fire wire". If you can't find what I'm talking about, take your VCR to someplace like Best Buy and they can help you. When you are connected, call up the Windows Movie Maker software on your computer. With your VCR on, you need to click on CAPTURE the the Record button. Capture should start your VCR automatically, and capture the film to a file on your computer. If your VCR doesn't start automatically after clicking Capture, then the Record button, something is wrong and you'll have to check out your connections, etc. After capture, follow the directions to edit and burn your recording to a DVD. It sounds complicated, but once you do it, it gets easier. Good luck and I'm so sorry for your loss. God bless your family.

You can do this with a VCR DVD combo player just put in a DVD/r in your DVD and the video tape you want to record out of and presto you have a VCR tape converted in to a DVD.

Yup. I did mine through a digital camcorder.

I hooked the VCR wires into the camcorder and taped the vcr tape onto my digital sony handycam.

I then hooked up my handycam to my PC and downloaded the movie, edited it and burned to a dvd.

I don't think your first answer is correct, because the dvd side has to be a burner, not a reader, so I don't think that they are 'relatively cheap'. I could be wrong...

If you get a dual player make sure it records as well!

You can, but you need some piece of equipment and a computer to do it. I imagine it's expensive.
