Another bird of the same species is usually best but not necessary -it depends on whether they will be sharing a cage. If they are going to have their own cages then it doesn't matter as much. The main this is that you should stick to something around the same size and intelligence level, and of a similar temperament. If you get something the size of a cockatoo they won't be able to relate to each other at all, and a bigger bird may just attack your parakeet because it doesn't see it as a companion.

Note: Don't let different species breed with each other - that would be irresponsible.

I suppose the quick answer then is "none". Even if you bring a second parakeet into the house, you should always let the new parakeet have its own cage until it gets used to the current parakeet you own. A lot of times the parakeets won't get along at first and will need their own cages. To ask a parakeet to share its home with an entirely different species is a bit rough. Parakeets in the wild don't let other birds into their nests! It's really best that each bird has its own cage. If two parakeets begin to get along and *want* to share a cage, that's of course OK. But I really doubt they'd voluntarily do that with other birds. :)

I would say other parakeets. Any time you have just one bird, your bond will be better with the bird than if you had two. If you like having your bond with your parakeet, don't get another one. If you don't care then, yes another parakeet. But when you get this other parakeet, those 2 will bond and you won't be as important to either of them.
