My 7-year old daughter has been swimming everyday, twice per day starting this past Monday. She loves to swim!!! I did not let her swim today and when I picked her up from the Y, her fingertips looked really dry, whilted like. No pain. Is there a connection between swimming and her dry fingertips? What is the cause? Should I take her to the doctor? I asked her if she played in the H2O today and she said no. What gives?

Thank you all for your answers. I won't pull her out of swimming, but I will continue to monitor her and make her put lotion on. The problem is I'm not with her when she gets out of the pool and she barely rinses. I'm not even going to talk about her hair. Thank you all for the advice.

There's nothing wrong with her. After swimmers get out of the pool, their skin is usually tight and dry because of the chlorine (or bromine depending on the pool) in the water. The chlorine strips the skin of natural protective oils and often leaves the skin ashy. As soon as she's done swimming and she's dried off, apply lotion on her skin to reduce dryness.

Your daughter will constantly have dry skin if you wish for her to continue swimming. It's just something you both are going to have to deal with.

that happens whenever you are in water for a long period of time. all of the natural oils in your skin are washed out, leaving fingers that look like prunes. It can also happen in the bathtub. Just put lotion on her hands and have her drink lots of water, there's no problem.

swimming in chlorine water makes your skin dry by definition.. I dont know why only her fingertips are getting dry.. but it should be her whole body
