I have belonophobia (fear of needles) and it gets in the way of my health and well-being. I am unable to get blood taken or get a vaccine without having a sudden, intense panic-attack. Help!

Face it, panic attack and all. Don't take this as medical advice, but from personal experience, the only way you can overcome a fear is to face it head on.

I would first start with just trying to stay in the same room with a syringe, with no needle yet attached. When you reach a comfortable level, hold the syring, look at it from all angles. Pull and push the plunger, to see how it works. Try to place the syringe on your skin. Pull and push the plunger several times, until your breathing is regulated.

Next, have someone put the needle (with cover) on the syringe. Handle it, look at it, get comfortable with it. Remove the needle cover and look at it. Pull and push the plunger several times. Get familiar with it.

Get an orange. Practice inserting the needle into the orange. Notice how the orange does not wince, or begin a panic attack. It waits patiently for the prick, for it knows it won't last long. Be the orange, concentrate on the orange, imagine your skin as the orange. Really. Try these things.

When you next need an injection of some sort, be that orange. Calm, relaxed, with knowlege it will only last a moment, and you will still be alright.

I have a roach phobia. Oh, I still have it, but I am much, much better. I no longer scream and become faint. I still am unable to pick up dead roaches, but at least I am calmer about it....smiling

Face it. I have the same problem. I don't care how old I am, if I want to sit there and tear up over it I will. lol I don't really have any panic attacks over it, but I tend to get stressed enough that after it's done my blood pressure may drop back to normal not long after and cause me to possibly pass out. So I don't ever care to go alone if I have to get any shots.

Talk to a friend, think logically without panic, is the needle really going to hurt? Millions of people say no.

Good Luck!

Get help with cognitive behavior specialist in your area. Psychologist trained on cognitive behavior should do the trick.
