I am a 5'6" and 127lb female and I am wondering how long it will take me to tone up lower body, specifically my butt/hamstrings and love handles. I have started on a 1500 calorie diet and I was wondering what the most effective exercise routine (cardio/weight training) would be.

depends on the time schedule you have...a 3-4 day excessive program is the best for you..each should be no longer than an hour if on a 3 day program..an hour and a half if on a 4 day . at least 30 minutes of your program dedicated to cardio. weight training should consist of toning, shaping exercises 3 sets of 12-15 reps per body part ..you can e-mail me at mikewood31@yahoo.com if you have anymore questions...good luck

3 times a week is very good, you do not need more than that. How long for your body to tone? It will depend on how out of shape you are now, and the intensity of your swimming. At a good intensity (not hard or extra hard, but not just getting your hair wet either), a month or two will be enough to see good results. You should feel a little tired after your work out swimming but not exhausted. If you do not feel a little tire then you have just been soaking around, if you are exhausted, you over did it. Rest, it is as important as swimming. Your muscles tone and recuperate as they rest, not when they strain during the exercise.

Run for 1 hour, 3 times per week. I did that for about 2 months and noticed a huge improvement. Don't forget to stretch!
