I don't think you can get them without paying a vet bill. It's not much of a choice there. You gotta do what you gotta do. My cat has allergies too. I'm not sure what he is allegic too ( I never thought to ask) but he bites himself a lot a pulls his hair out. Every so often we have to go back to the vet and get another shot! Just the way life is, I guess.

Unfortunately, oral corticosteroids don't tend to work as well in cats. They do better with the injectable long term steroids, especially for allergies.
You can ask your vet if there are any other medications that you can give in addition to the injections to try to extend the time between injections. And actually, every couple of months is pretty good. Most cats need it every 2-3 weeks!

Speak to your vet about just getting refills and possibly bringing the cat is, say every 6 months instead of 2.

Call around to various vet clinics and see what they would charge you for it. Also look on line. Your veterinarian is required by law to write a prescription for you to take somewhere else if you request it. Another option is sometimes it is cheaper to get a larger pill and then split the pill yourself into the dosage you need.

Cortisone and similar drugs are prescription only in the US. It might be different elsewhere.
Maybe you could look into either finding the cause of the allergy or trying de-sensitization therapy (which, admittedly, doesn't always work).
Benadryl is available OTC in most places but might not provide the relief you need.

Keep getting it from your vet. try calling a few other vets see if one offers it for a cheaper price. Buying medications for your cat online or "substitutes" can be dangerous. Trust your vet and discuss your concerns with him, he may even suggest a cheaper alternative.

i found and adopted a beautiful apple head siamese kitten. she started to cough and gag one day so i took her to the vet and he diagnosed asthma. he gave her a shot and then gave me cordisone tablets. he said, " i gave you way more than you need for when she has another attack". it wasn't expensive, $10 i think.
anyway ask your vet for more so you dont have to keep coming in each time. seems to me that is just a way of getting you to come in for a visit. if not call around to local vets and straight out ask them if you bring your cat in for an initial exam during an allergy attack will they prescribe you more meds for later attack so you dont have to bring them in everything. assure them you will bring kitty in if anthing changes. some vet understand that people cant afford cash out of their pocket just any old time. ofcourse some meds it is illegal to prescribe without seeing the patient each time. check around or just ask your regular vet.
