My brother just brought his dog from Florida to live with us for a month while he helps his wife's parents fix up a house in Utah. My mom and I were cleaning a batch of fresh lettuce from our garden when I found a garden slug. I was just playing around but I said, "Here's Avery's (Avery is the dog's name) dinner!" and held it over her head. She jumped up and snatched it from me. She didn't spit it back out . . . does anyone else's dog do that??? I doubt it, but I'm feeling a little queasy. It was a pretty good-sized slug, and she chewed it up and swallowed it.

Dogs often will eat slugs and snails, the only precaution I have is ensure you live in an area free of lungworm (call a local vet to find out). Slugs and snails are the intermediate host for this parasite and it is a bit nasty if your dog gets it.
It the area is free of this parasite, just imagine how good it will be to have a back yard that doesn't have any slugs!! Just don't let Avery give you kisses. (smiling)

dogs will eat just about anything. The dog thought you was holding out a treat. You called him to it. It's not like he can recognize a slug

If you think that is bad, most dogs eat their own poop!!!
Oh and did you know that people will eat slugs for food, S. cargo is what its called!!!
If you watch TV then you will see people eating worse things than slugs for money, the show is called Fear Factor if you didn't know!!!

My dogs don't but they probably would if I held it up like a treat like that. Odds are that dog doesn't make a habit of eating insects either but the way it was given to her, she thought she was getting a present.

Welll, Doggie thought it was food the way you held it up and ate it. You did say it was dinner..he might know that word but failed to grasp your sarcastic wit, dogs do that.

Yeah I use to walk a dog that liked bugs. It sometimes ate crickets so your story is not really strange.

Dogs are omnivores, which means that they will eat anything at all. I have even heard of a lab that ate rocks.
