It seems like I am the only person who has to walk or take the bus everywhere. When I am walking down the street in the hot, I pass very few people. I live in a city with terrible transportation and it can be a real hassal sometimes. Is there anyone else out there who has to get around in the sun, rain, and cold?

I am fortunate to live a few blocks from work but when it comes to going to alot of the places that are in this area, so many of them are out of the transportation area. Many buses dont' stop anywhere near where I have to go and I find myself walk half a mile sometimes to get someplace and sometimes I have to walk out in the street along the side because of there being no sidewalk or some stuplid sprinkler spaying the sidewalk.

You would find plenty of company if you lived in England. I used to live there w/o a car and it was no big problem to get around because of their bus & train systems. Plus the English like to walk, and so sidewalks and footpaths are everywhere. In fact, if there is an old footpath, and it runs through say, Farmer John's field, it is considered a public footpath, and anyone can use it, but of course you are expected to close any gates you have opened, etc. The USA is highly motorized country and unfortunately, someone in your position suffers for it.

You are witnessing the lack of transportation planning that exists in the suburban deserts of the United States. Talk to your city planners about what you are experiencing and ask for sidewalks or bike lanes. Often expanding bus service is a question of funding, so write your local county supervisors or city council members. The time you are going through is why most people in the suburbs are forced to rely on their cars. City planners need to give people more options to get around. Get a bike or move to an urban area is all I can tell you. A bike will at least help get you there faster, and more and more transit systems are allowing bikes on buses (link below), so you can take your bike with you to get where you're going.

I used to be in the same boat as you ( no pun intended at all). The public transportaion where I live is unreliable at best and non-exsistant at worst. I was always limited in where and when I could work. I got lucky and found a job within two miles of my house. I just grinned and bore it until I got lucky and my uncle gave me his old car. I still dread the thought of having to do that again though.
