Remember when our Government said " We will endure, We will not turn our backs on the New Government of Vietnam, We will prevail. Sound familiar? Now look at Iraq. Any idea when we will go down in abject defeat?

Or just as germaine, by what criteria can we declare "victory" and go home? When the last Muslim is dead?

There is no standard.

I remember Vietnam well enough (I had a high draft #) to see the parallels here, something the youngsters who post here in favor of the "war" unfortunately cannot.

If we leave too soon, we will have 2 Irans instead of 1. We may get that anyway, or something resembling Yugoslavia coming apart at the seams. If we stay too long, they'll need another draft.

Viet Nam was one type of war and Iraq is another. I served in Viet Nam and the bureaucrats in Washington did everything in their power to make sure we fought a war of slow attrition. From second guessing military decisions to supporting anti-war sentiment in the US our Government failed us miserably in Viet Nam. In Iraq we are fighting the President's personal vendetta and there is a great deal of Government support and a will for a final outcome. We are close to a settlement with the Shiites and when that happens you will see the bombings and terrorist acts subside. When that happens our troops will be reduced gradually until we are a small presence like in Kuwait.

When?

When, in the eyes of King George II (also known as "dubya"), enough people are dead, maimed and tortured

In today's news:
President Bush's signing statement said the president, as commander in chief, can "waive the torture ban" if "he" decides that harsh interrogation techniques will assist in preventing terrorist attacks.
