First of all, to find out what it is doing to your credit, you can get a free copy of your credit report at freecreditreport.com. Once you know who is carrying your balance, or now lack there of, you need to notify them immediately. Hopefully you have proof that you have paid this debt. Another option is also to file a dispute straight through the credit reporting system. If all else fails, you may also want to get a lawyer.

I hate telling you about this sad state of electronic affairs. You are looking at a good bit of money with attorney fees.
"Debt" is being bought and sold on a weekly (almost) basis, You pay the buyer $800 and the seller still thinks you owe him $800.
It is so out of hand, an attorney is necessary, or you can wait 7 years and it goes away, you can have it deleted from your credit report. But, by all means, meanwhile file a rebuttal as a disputed bill or debt. Credit agency is obligated to allow you to do this.
Get a written legal release before you pay anyone a cent.
You can stop phone and other harassment by complaint to the Federal Trade Commission. The thing the creditor really hates to hear, threat of bankruptcy. Just say you are so upset by all of this you think bankruptcy is your only choice ! But never actually do this unless your tax bracket is millions.

If you have a copy of the pay off send a copy to the company that sent you to the collection agency and if you are getting letters from other agencies also send them proof of the pay off. Also get a copy of your credit report so you can see if it's on there if it is. File a dispute and give them the pay off info that will take some time to change on your credit report but it will help. I've been down this road more than once, so all I can say is be patient and COVER you butt all the way. Good luck.

When any of these agencies contacts you, send them a dispute letter. Demand that they validate the debt, and cease and desist all contact with you.
Keep an eye on your credit reports. If they post anything, dispute it with the agencies. If the report is not removed, you now have grounds to sue the collection agency in small claims court for $1000.
If you need help doing this email me....I'm not a lawyer or credit counsoler, just someone who has been down this road before.

contact your original company issuing the collection as well as the agency or agencys they reported it to. you should have a letter or some confirmation that the debt was paid? fax or mail a copy of it to them and order them to cease. also send a copy to the reporting bureaus as well so they can update it. they will continue to do this bcuz the agency that collected the debt, in most cases, will not report the debt paid to the issuing creditor. they got paid for the collection and that's all they care about. so it's on you to rectify the situation. make sure you hound the agency just like they hounded you to fix the problem and have them report it to the bureaus and the issuing company of the collection

Unfortunately, if you pay a collection agency without proper back up, demanding a pay for delete etc., they do things like that - they are scum (in my opinion).
I would suggest going to the link I provided and do some reading. Feel free to ask questions.
It is a "free" do it your self credit repair site. There is an enormous amount of info on that site. The collection agency if violating your rights. You need to learn your rights and use them.

After obtaining your free annual credit report call the consumer relation's phone number for all three credit bureaus and open up disputes that the accounts have been paid in full. Derogatory information will stay on your credit report for 7 years.

If the debt went to a collection agency, then the original company no longer has it. Get copies of your canceled check and send it to them.
