A happy birthday, and sign the office card should be enough. You really don't think that every holiday etc. should call for a gift exchange? Check out one of the Seinfeld episodes where Elaine bitches about her office celebrating everything from a birthday, to a pet hamster giving birth.

If everyone else is buying him a present ask if you could go in on something. 26 is not a big deal. If you are close with this co-worker you may want to get him a helium baloon or a sweet treat. If you are going to happy hour you may buy him a drink..or offer to buy his lunch. Depends on your relationship, but no means should you feel obligated.

This depends on what tradition is in your office. If people normally exchange gifts, find out the estimated budget. A gift card is probably a good bet. A favorite coffee shop, restaurant, bookstore, or electronics store are safe bets. Another option is to take him to lunch.

Its not normal for co-workers to give each other birthday presents, unless you are also friends. A card is more than enough, since you relly don't know that person. A simple spoken Happy Birthday is enough to acknowledge his birthday

If you want to...it would be a nice gesture. Get him a movie card and some popcprn and soda and candy. A perfect movie gift for home. Put it in a cheap plastic popcorn bowl or something manly.A fun gift but not too personal.

Nothing personal. A Card sign by the team (if any) and maybe a gift certificate for a restaurant.

No, you shouldn't. I have done that before and later on he turned out to be a jerk. Make sure you know the person before you give them gifts. You never know what they are going to say about you or your gift. Gift giving is very sensitive issue especially in a work place.
It's not too late to give him a gift the next year. This year you can say you didn't know about it.

Nothing. A card, maybe, at the most. Unless you're trying to get into his pants, then maybe lunch. But I wouldn't start imposing myself on someone who's only been there for 3 months. Then he's going to feel like he has to get you something on your birthday.

Usually, someone passes around a card. Just write a little message and sign it. Maybe, if no one else has, start a cake pool and have everyone pitch in to buy one.
