Hemophilia is a disorder that makes the body unable to stop even minor bleeding. It is hereditary, usually.

the last answer is incorrect....example of too little information, extrapolated. Low platelets, or thrombocytopenia can lead to difficulty in clotting, but for completely different reason than hemophilia. The most well known type of hemophilia is an inherited disorder and is sex linked inheritance pattern. It is usually a deficiency of factor VIII, although there are some other, less publicized types of hemophilia. Do a google search, and limit yourself to sites with .edu after them for reliable explanations.

Also, the father does not carry the gene, the mother is the carrier, and if the only X chromosome the child inherits (as in males) the defective, then the gene is expressed (the child has hemophilia).

yeh they all basically answered it.. its like a lack of something in the blood that stops clotting. its carried on the x chromosome and is therefore only existant in males, because they ony have one x chromosome and if that chromosome is infected they will get the disease, where as due to haemophillia being a resecive gene a woman cannot get it because you have to have a haemophiliac male and a female carryer, and haemophilliacs dont normally live longe enough, and female haemophilliacs cant give births cos they will die!! hmm depressing but i for some reason want to say lol.. praps cos of my actually using what i learn in biology for once hmm...

The inability of the blood to coagulate properly, clot.
So if a hemophiliac is cut or injured in a way that would cause bleeding it is extremely serious. Also things like bee strings and insect bites are dangerous to them.

It's where the blood doesn't clot like it should. It can cause major problems in that if a person who has hemophilia gets even a minor paper cut, he/she can literally bleed to death. www.hemophilia.org is a good place to go if you want to learn more.
